My CG125 puts out slightly less than 9kw. My housemates hairdryer puts out 2kw.

I can't help but conclude my bike would go faster if it was powered by 5 hairdryers! Shocked

Even worse than that, a 50cc four stroke scooter puts out 2.8kw (according to Google)

I know small bikes have weedy engines, but it's quite depressing to think that they're comparable to a £6.99 hairdryer from Argos...and you don't need to put oil in or replace the bearings on your hairdryer.

Am I doing something wrong with my calculations? The logic seems inescapable.

The hairdryer uses 2kw, the output will be far lower, most energy will produce heat and noise..

The 9kw from the cg is its final power output, it would use allot more energy to produce that 9kw and again it would be heat and noise and 40% (if that) final power output to the rear wheel after getting through the drive train e.t.c.

Given an engine is 33% efficient, your bike would be more comparable to 14 2kW hairdryers...

D'oh, good point! Doh!

So if I assume 25% efficiency (probably huge underestimate but Google doesn't have much data on hairdryer efficiency, bizarrely), that means my bike would only get bested by more than 20 hairdryers on wheels. Bet the power-to-weight ratio of a hairdryer is pretty good though.

I could just say, my bike is more powerful than 10 microwaves (something slightly more sinister about a microwave)! Cool

Any other interesting comparisons out there?

The only inefficiency in a hairdryer is sound, so about 5% inefficiency I'd guess.

You'd need a bloody big battery or long mains lead to replace your engine with hairdryers anyway!

Only the same as 0.0000025 nuclear power stations Laughing You would only need 400000 CG's to power a small area Shocked

LOL, great thread!!! Someone needs to build a 20 hairdryer propelled machine just to confirm this theory!! Maybe it's one to mail to Brainiacs.

Depends if you include the weight of the power station.

All the best

Does your hairdryer motor not heat up then? Wink

You're right, it would go like stink for twenty metres but then the electric cord would get pulled out of the plug socket and you'd stop Sad

Is that the industry standard?? I don't think so! Shifty

Anyway if you did that, you'd also have to include the weight of all the drilling, piping and transporting equipment involved for petrol powered beasties. Those north sea oil rigs are pretty weighty! Although could you try using this argument to beat the 33bhp restrictions on power-to-weight ratios...??

I hereby declare this a "silly post"!

I did reply to this I'm sure of it...maybe I posted it in another thread by mistake.

Bugger it...

Yup, but that heat gets sucked through so isn't really going to waste. I've not used a hairdryer for years so not totally sure of where the motor is though..

Could get a generator on the back, eliminating the need for a lead or massive battery.
Instead you'd just have an engine, a fuel tank and...oh hang on. Doh!

I'm not moaning, it's great fun buzzing around on it. I just think it's funny that I could be outpowered by a few handheld electrical items (as could you...! Wink )

26bhp = 19.4kW = 40 hairdryers running @ 25% efficiency Very Happy

It'd be mighty hard work to fit 40 of them into a bike, but it could be done with the aid of some heavy-duty duct tape.

-edit- 26bhp! Aren't you only 16? Wink
