Yesterday I went to town on my NSR, I fully cleaned the brake calipers and replaced the brake pads, I replaced the rear sprocket, but I cant change the front sprocket and chain until I figure out how to get the chain off.

I checked on the net and it says that one of the links should be held on by some sort of clip which I have identified as there is one with the new chain.

But I cant find it on the old chain??? could it have fallen off? It was dark, but I must have gone around the chain about 20 times trying to find it. Was this web site bullshiting??? or does the original Chain not have on of these clips??

Help please,

Mike.

It might not have the split link on the old chain. Do like Zim says Very Happy
Will the chain come off if you adjust the wheel all the way forward?

It won't be too difficult to fit the new one. but if the Old on'es not a Split-Link then it's gonna be a pain

****DON'T PANIC *** i had this problem with mine....'til I got the angle grinder out Twisted Evil

turns ot some of Honda's chains are "closed" chains, and as such have no link pieces (it should be quite obvious to see the link btw) so cut it off. Make sure your new chain has a link and isnt a closed chain as well (Honda dealers can order an open cahin but its pot luck what you get)

hope this helps Very Happy

Oh and I forgot to say that there are 2 types of link... the traditional split-link which is the one you're looking for (used on bicycles etc) or the one that looks just like a normal section of chain (supplied with my closed chain).
Either way, if there is no split-link then you'll have to get a link remover out or use a grinder on the bastard.

Hi

Most small bikes use splti links which are the type you have seen (make sure you put the link the right way round). Make sure they havent put the link on the "back" of the chain where it isnt obvious.

It could well be that the original chain is endless, or has been fitted with a rivit link. For these you "need" a chain link splitter. In reality an angle grinder is cheap and easy (pick one up for £10 or so).

If you had landed up buying an endless chain then you have to take the swinging arm out to get the old one off and fit the new one. Oh and dont do what I did and put the swinging arm back in place before you put the new chain in place (guess what I did when I put the bike back together after getting the frame powder coated)

All the best

Keith

Perhaps its been put on wrong ie look on the other side of the chain as its only got a Clip on one side>

either way a new split link is 2£ for alike a DID one, but how u get teh old chain off is beyond me i got a pin exstractor for cam chains but that was hard work and there alot smaller.

good luck

I should have explained better (damn my sore fingers!!! Very Happy ) The new chain comes with a split in the middle and a link to put in (with the little thingy bob clip) I checked both sides of the chain for one of those during the 20 or more rotations. I then noticed the links on the new chain all have the pins grinded down at the edges to keep them together apart from the pin you use to connect the chain to make it whole. So I then looked around the chain another 200 (almost not an exageration (sp)) times to find a link where the pins had not been grinded. I eventually gave up and decided that Honda must have fitted a continuos chain when it was made.

Thanks for your help and advice guys you are all great!!! I suppose I will have to take it to the bike shop near me and try and convince them to take the old chain off for free!!! Either that or a trip to Argos/BQ for an Angle Grinder! HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA!!! Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Mikey.
