Mate of mine had a 125 field bike, which I had a go on and didn't really enjoy.
A few years later, he convinced me to have a go at a CBT. I think he said "Go on, it's a fun day out and even if you don't like it, you've had a great day!". So anyway, I booked it and had a go. Kept putting my right foot down to go and wondering why I was stopping!
Passed the CBT and was absolutely hooked following a 50mph stint down the A414 on a Yamaha SR125!
Got home and said to me mum: "Mum, if I was going to do something you didn't want me to do, would you rather I told you or just went and did it anyway?"
Very shortly afterwards I got a loan, did Direct Access and bought my ZXR400H.
Edit: I was 22 btw, hence Direct Access. ____________________ My Bikepics page

My Dad was into bikes while I was young, and from 15 onwards I was a big motorcycle racing fan. I remember watching Rossi win at Suzuka in 2000 shortly before enquiring about a CBT.
I did the CBT on the first saturday after I turned 17 and bought a KH100 shortly afterwards. |

I was 19 when I got my licence and first bike - my 1990 ZXR400
I'd been thinking about it for a few years, and had dabbled a bit with other people's bikes, having little rides round parks and things.
What really made me kick myself into gear though was my 16 year old brother getting himself a Derbi sports 50 on L plates. "If he can do it..."
So, one friday I did my CBT. The following wednesday/thursday/friday morning I had lessons. Friday afternoon I passed my test, and Saturday morning I bought my ZXR400.
7 days!
Been riding 5 years now, and loving my GSXR600. ____________________ <Simple> no I'm shaven Jon

I was taken to see speedway at my local track when i was 8. Me and my mate then decided it would be awsome to be a speedway rider.
So i pestered my dad loads, and it turns out he allready did ride grasstrack ( which is the same thing basically, but in fields ), so he took me along, and i had my first go on my speedway bike.
Got into racing from about the age of 10/12 and then as soon as i turned 16 got my CBT and then my A2 at 17. Bikes are a part of me, both on and off the track.
I dont think i would be me, without a bike in my garage.

Being a bit of a rock chick in my yoof, the crossover was always there and most of my boyfriends from the age of about 15 had bikes. I was pillion on and off for years, enjoyed it but nothing special.
I suppose it got serious about 12 years ago when I got together with my current other half. he had been bike-mad since his teens, and most of the times we went aywhere it was on his bike. I started to get a feel for it, and then to really look forward to it, still quite happy just as pillion though.
Then one Wednesday afternoon about 5 years ago he came to pick me up from work to take me out for lunch, and we got knocked off by a myopic car driver.
A few months to get over the injuries (whiplash & bruising for me, broken collarbone for him) and he was raring to go again. But for me, a lot of the enjoyment had gone out of it. I would tense up every time we approached a junction, try to put my feet down if he did a slow tight turn, lean the wrong way & squeal if he banked it over, basically act like a complete numpty. I gritted my teeth and got on with it cos it was still our main form of transport, but I had lost all the joy.
So he suggested I might feel better if I was in control. We obtained a very old XS250 custom and he set about teaching me to ride. At first I was terrified, never thought I would get the hang of it, but I persevered. After anout 4 weeks of practise on our local asda carpark, I did my CBT and started riding on the road. Gradually the fun started to come back, but having a 100 on the road on L-plates was a bit precarious and it was suggested that I go for my DAS.
Disaster! The GS500 was just too tall for me, and I dropped it, hard. Twice. There went my confidence. So I passed my car test instead, and the bike stayed mostly in the shed.
However, I'm stubborn, and I still remembered the good times, so I had another go at the restricted test, passed, and got my Eliminator.
This is when I really realised what it was all about. My bike isn't fast, it isn't very pretty but when I ride it I turn into a different person, or rather not just a person but a kind of melding of me and machine. Does that sound daft? I make no apologies, that's what it's like.
I'm still quite a nervous rider, but each time I go out I get just a bit better, and that'll do for me. ____________________ Sod falling in love, I wanna fall in chocolate. |

I was back-packing around Australia about a year ago when the manager of the hostel I was staying in convinced me to book a helicopter flight over Alice Springs during sunset. He decided to come along for the flight also being a helicopter nut, and took us both out to the airport on his Honda Blackbird. About 10 miles on really fast roads. Having never been on any sort of motorbike before it was a real adrenaline rush. The helicopter flight was awesome for the view, but riding pillion on the back of that bike was what stuck in my memory. (Although I won't be going on one in shorts and t-shirt again!)
Roll-on a few months to being back in England (and now turned 24) and a friend offers me the use of his scooter that's been sitting in his garage not being used. I take my CBT on a manual and before I know it I've booked lessons and am doing DAS. From nothing to full licence in just under a month. Never ended up riding the scooter and bought a Honda CBF500 instead!
I think it's definitely a good thing to have driven a car for a good few years. Means you've got used to the being on the road and judging the behaviour of others, leaving you to concentrate more fully on riding the bike properly. When doing my CBT, two 16 year olds on twist-and-go's looked the most likely to kill themselves - not because they were unable to master the mechinics of riding, but because they had absolutely no idea of the highway code, how to properly apporach roundabouts, second-guessing the actions of other people, etc.
It's great fun having the bike and am enjoying it immensely. It was the right sort of bike to get for a newbie but I'll be thinking of trading it in next spring/summer and replacing it with either a CBR600F or CBR600RR.
What do people think?
