1) when you got your bike, did you all have the generic honda speedo from japan that stops at 180kmh?

2) did you do anything to get round it? if so what?

3) those who fitted those little mechanical speedo converters, did they work well, and are they accurate? (im assuming they will be, if its just a mechanical gear ratio thingy, not sure though)

also, i remember mole mentioning something about changing his entire speedo unit to one that read in mph, but i cant find a post about it, can anyone remember the details of this? how much it costs? etc and why he did it?

4) if a speedo reaches its absolute max? will a bike keep accelerating? (again im pretty sure this is a dumb question but i want to check, as it might also depend on the bike and other restrictions)

i think thats it for now, thanks everyone

My bike is "derestricted" by a mileage convertor jobbie...if it is indeed your speedo that is restricted, and you derestricted it by either bending the metal tab or using a "black box", then yes, assuming that your bike is capable of over 180kmph it will continue to go faster...if it's still restricted, then it will shut down a couple of cylinders (assuming that you have 4) once it hits the 180 mark.

I would recommend the inline convertor...it also means that you can sell the bike with a lower mileage in the future Wink

check that the converter will fit tho, neither the blue or gold one fit my NC24. bracketry in the way.

you can buy MPH speedo faces off elliotts for the VFRs, dunno about the other ones. i think you just dismantle your speedo and swap the faces for this.

however, i cant be fucked with all that, so i'm just downgearing it for now and sticking to 112 mph.

When I bought my VFR it the previous owner had already 'modified' the speedo restriction. This just meant that the speed restriction didnt come into effect and allowed the bike to gather enough speed to go past the end of the speedo (past the nippon seiki). I soon bought a mechanical speedo converter just so that I could read the speedo at night and saved my old brain from calculating kmh to mph. Seemed to work fine although I still have doubts about the accuracy of the actual speedo (it aint mine now so why worry Laughing )

Hi

Tyres change size with wear and speed, and load, which will affect speedo readings. Also in the UK the speedo MUST read the correct speed or higher.

To add to the fun I think most speedos use a maget driven by the cable to induce another magnet to rotate which pulls the speedo round. The magnets gets weaker with age (and the odd bounce down the road)

All the best

Keith

my bike went off the clock when i go it, then i took the clocks off then i took the clocks off and couldn't remember which wires went where from the black box (which i'm gussing was a derestricter) into the clocks and i cudn't test it cos the bike was off the road, so i snapped the speedo tab thing put it all together and it still goes off the clock (minus the box). oh and it carries accelerating past max

Hi

The grey imports will not be tested, but that wont be a defence if you get caught speeding (just one more offence for them to hit you with)

All the best

Electronic speed de-restrictor (rev-booster) . This gadget will de-restrict your grey-import bike by cancelling out the speed limit signal sent to the ignition system, and allows the rider to fully appreciate the performance of his/her machine where the law allows! (you know you need one if your bike stops at 113mph).

It's not res'd in the speedo sometimes. That box is to remove the rev-limiter in the gear-select.

I second that. I have a nice shiny blue in-line on my bike which allegedly "de-restricts" it (as seen in RiDE about 4 years ago...). Plus it looks like your speedo goes up to 180mph! WOW. It seems to read pretty low, but this is a good thing when approaching speed cameras (or nasty gatso van things which seem to be appearing all over Wales Sad Crying or Very sad )

It cost about £20 I seem to remember, and worth every penny (it also means you can tell how fast you are travelling in the dark (useful that).

surely you'd want it to read slightly high then? Confused
