Bike Security

I was just wondering what kind of security people use on their bike. I assume everyone has a heavy duty chain or keeps their bike in a garage at night..... but what do you carry with you when you go out on the bike or leave it parked in town? also, how do you carry it?? I don't feel safe with a big chain in my backpack and apart from anything else its a pain in the arse.

what are people's opinions? is just a disk lock a good enough deterent or is it just an illusion of security? whats the minimum you would use?

My bikes are garaged when I am at home, but when I'm out and about I never lock them, even in central London.

It's a matter of principle for me, I have to say.

My reasoning is that it is not down to me to prevent you stealing my bike, it is up to you to not steal it. I refuse to live in a world where I assume everyone is a criminal. I prefer to assume that they are not.

I only ever had a bike stolen once (and it was awful for so many reasons that I am not going to discuss), so I know how bad it can be. But it was stolen from my home, before I had a garage.

The only exception to locking it is if I am going to a bike show or something and want to lock the helmet to the bike, rather than carrying it around all day. Then I use a U-lock just to secure the helmet to the front wheel.

at first i carried my chain, which weighs about 7 kg or something, but this got too heavy on my back when riding far distances. i also had my disc lock, but once i forgot that i had a disc lock on my bike, and chipped a huge piece of plastic when moving it.

now i use nothing because my alarm is pretty sensative, so i do feel that if someone is gonna try and take my bike, they will have me to deal with.

My bike is now in my own lockup near my flat.
Metal fence with heavy, toughened padlock.
The bike is a steel shipping container behind the fence, with another heavy duty padlock on the door.
The bike has a disc lock on it
An Oxford heavy chain on the rear wheel
And the bike is data tagged.

You missed one , riding a rat bike , its got so much cosmetic rust on it and is 12 years old nobody would want it.

But going out I chain my er chain to the pillion grab rail , cus if you put it in a back pack / rucksack and have an accident it may cause you serious back injury.

I have an Oxford Monster wrapped around a drain pipe in the back yard of my house with a locked door, I can see it just under my window all night.

I have smartwater too.

At home i leave it in the garden unlocked most of the time during the day and sometimes at night if i fall asleep by accident.

I usually don't carry any security riding in my local area so tend to only go to shops where i can see the bike or i can park right outside the door.

When i go into town i take my big chain with a big padlock. It's very heavy but i wear it like a sash, diagonally across my body so i don't really notice the weight.

My bike is in a locked garage at night with the alarm on on the bike.
And when I'm out I usualy take a disk lock if I'm leaving it for any length of time.

Id not considerd that being a danger ether untill thats just said, but i suppose doing 90MPH and you catch the cain one something...whats going to split 1st, you or the chain?

i'm unlucky in the fact that i don't have a garage but lucky due to the fact i live on the iow.

bike lives on the drive, with a guvner disc lock on when i remember to put it on and a waterproof cover , the bike also has built in H.I.S.S hondas ignition immobaliser.

when i'm on the iow out and about i don't bother but on the mainland i generally put the disc lock on.

i keep my bike garaged at night and when i go to work or whatever i take my big oxford lock, i used to carry it on the rear of my bike there is a little plinth fo putting luggage on and i used to cram it under a cargo net on there. i say "used to" as on a couple of occasions it shook loose out of the cargo net and swang proudly about an inch away from the side of my back tire which i realised was ludicrously dangerous so now i have a mini motrax tail pack that straps down over the back.
