One Armed Riders...?

Hey Guys,

There used to be a site for one armed riders, does anyone know what it is and if it's still about?

A friend lost the use of his right arm in a bike accident earlier this year, he has limited finger movement but he lives for bikes and has for the last 50 years. So i thought i'd dig up the site for him as he is planning to get back on a bike and i thought the site may have some handy tip's and links.

Plus speaking to people in the same situ as him may rise his spirits.

Do a google search for NABD, national association for bikers with disability or something. If you read the stories there is one by a guy called Andy who lost his arm in an accident, I work with him.

Guesses are thumb hydraulic clutches or auto boxes. Been mulling over idea's for a bike to suit the guy i know, but he'll already know what he wants to do.

Not without extensive work and engineering, my choice if it comes to needing an auto (which it shouldnt as he has full leg movement) would be to use a big cc scooter engine.

I've mentioned it before:

At Snetterton a bloke came passed me around Corams with one arm resting on the tank - I was going for it a bit, but he was a fair bit faster. Thought he was taking the piss, but it turns out he only had one arm.

Apparantly he was actually a racer and hasn't done too badly at it either. If you do a search on motoforum you might find some information for a bit of inspiration.

There's a guy who works in Wylie and Holland near Telford who's got only one arm, and he rides. He's got a double lever (forget which side).

You can ride a standard jawa 350 with one hand, the clutch operates with both a standard hand lever and the gear lever.

Otherwise you can put the clutch and brake levers on one side (Using one of those tarty thumb brake units) or simply two bowden levers in different positions.

I met a guy earlier this year who had one arm off above the elbow and one leg off so far up you wouldn't know he ever had one. He was riding a manually geared combination so anything is possible.

Honda made a variety of automatic bikes in the 1970's with the suffix 'A'. Certainly made a CB750A and a CD450A. Don't know if anyone still does something similar.

NABD and their scottish equivalent SABD are definately the people to contact . Both are extremely active clubs.

I have seen two conversions for different limbs being missing. One was the clutch lever was made to operate the rear brake and the clutch was on a left hand side twist grip (so you dont need the right leg). The second was where the front brake leve operated both brakes, a bit like a car foot brake. The clutch was then off the redundant rear brake lever so you didnt need the left arm. This was an impressive system as the guy used to race it! you could set up brake balance and allsorts.

There was also a guy at rockingham yesterday with only one arm, he had is KD and everything, very impressive, I cant even go half his speed with two arms

Could a quickshifter help with changing gears? I have no idea though how this would help with pulling away. Maybe where thumb brakes can be put, having that wired up to the clutch maybe?
