Its going to be my first winter.

When do most people normaly stop?

The weather today has been realy nice 16C about 60F, so not too bad at all, wife even managed to cut the grass yesterday.

Am I too optomistic for mid November?

I am planning to stop at the first sign of salt / gritting, when does this normaly start? and stop? To be honest i've never noticed in the car.

I live in the Halifax area of West Yorkshire.

I'll be a cager again, glad my Mondeo has a heated front windscreen!!!!!!

Never stop unless instructed to do so by police.
Buy the weather proof kit and keep going.
Just be very very carefull.
Wash down the machine and re-lube every other day.
Anti corosion spray the bike with Scottoiler F365

Come on guys, I ride every day of the week, i'm not a weekend warrier like lots of bikers, my first ever ride to work was in snow.

But....

Its hilly as owt here and we do get snow, the hole entire cul de sac is often an ice ring for a few weeks on end.

I will ride the bike during winter, but only to keep it going, probably start it twice a week and do 10-20miles a week at the weekends.

But I don't intend to ride to work. I don't have any facilities at work for hosing it down, to protect it, ER5s rot in the salt, and we get lots.

Also when I get home from work on a night at 6pm, I walk the dog for 1 hour and then my wife goes to work. Thus I won't have time to hose it down clean during the week, hence I will be going in the car.

What I was looking for was an indication, when the salting will start.

I have even considered, buying another car for winter, as my wife has now adopted the mondeo as her car.

I'm certain you don't mean anything like stopping riding your bike, cos only soft southern pufters stop riding in the winter Wink

Normally stop around November for commuting, mainly due to fog tho', I hate the damn stuff, doesn't help that I live on a moor on top of a hill. I tend to use it most weeks if the roads are ice free.

allmost every day for me too, its easier for me to commute on the bike rather than train/get a car and licence.

I can park on campus for free!

Dont sit in traffic

Go to and from at my conveiniance.

All for a little cold/fog/rain

answers are, high vis gear, waterproofs and gore-tex.

salt everywhere? Just was your bike off and use scottoiler FS365

Bingo!

i've got the winter gear.

Its the daily care of the bike, I don't have time to do, I have 2 little ones and the wife works, I won't have time to wash it down every day.

Plus I think you should see where I live in the winter.

That is true. Lives right on the top of a hill, it would be incredibly stupid to even consider taking a bike out on that road. And that's me saying that!!!! Shocked Thumbs Down

I kept the er5 on the street mark, using it everyday, all I done was wipe it down with wd40 on a rag. Works well so long as you remove the standing water. Smile
