Right, just wondering if anyone can help?

Basically I have just bought a Honda CB450DX which is based on the older CB400N Motor.
And I am about to perform a full service on the bike myself, well atleast try.
And one thing the Honda workshop manual doesn't make clear is the Balancer chain adjustment.

So I am wondering if anyone has experience of doing said job, and if they have any tips?
As all the manual says is just undo the inspection cover, undo the bolt on the balancer doodah, and it automatically adjusts itself?
Doesn't say anything about having the engine running either like it does the Camchain tension?
But surely there must be something more to it than that?

So help! Smile

Don't know about the balancer, but if the camchain tensioner is a superdream style one with a nut on the back of the cylinder head, this is the way to do it (rather than what the manual claims).

Remove rocker cover.
Loosen adjuster nut.
Press down hard on top of the tensioner blade with an old screwdriver.
Tighten adjuster nut while still pressing down.
Replace rocker cover.

On the superdreams, the tensioner relys on a spring to tighten it. The spring is not strong enough. Pressing the tensioner down should ensure a nice whirring sound from the camchain at tickover rather than a death rattle.

Anyone ever owned a Superdream that knows?

Engine is exactly the same as the 250/400 unit only bored out.

IIRC, you need one of the engine covers off. Hence no oil in the engine, so don't do it at tickover!

I remember doing this when I had the engine in pieces, in an exploratory I-just-bought-this-superdream-excercise, so maybe it might not need a cover off that requires draining the oil!

Reading that back, its not much help is it! Sorry.

I do seem to remember it being 'that simple' though.

i got both the 250 + 400 superdreams (both in bits). though i haven't done the tensioning of that one, only the cam chain (which is 2 bolts on the outside of the engine)...

but the tensioners do break... easily. so don't over tighten it.

i'll see what i can find out from my stack of information about those bikes.
