well my next door nieghbour has moved out and he has a TIG welder that he doesn't use and he has given it to me. great!
but how exactly do i use one! Laughing
anyone got any tips and what are the limitations of TIG welders? i plan to practice of some scrap bits of metal to try and get good at it, but first need to learn how to use one safely!

Hi, you sure its TIG not MIG? TIG is a better quality weld but uses more expensive filler rods like arc welders.

tig is designed to do fine bits of work eg on tanks but you have to be seriously good tig has a habit of blowing strait through metal and an unhealthy apetite for tips if not careful.

practice . make sure you have gas, pure argon for TIG
get a good head shield too Thumbs Up
then strike the arc with the tungsten and fill with filler rod
its usualy best to bend the end of the rod round so it wont stab you in the eye and blind you Very Happy Thumbs Up

I agree, go on a welding course
Welding is a highly skilled trade. You are unlikely to be briliant at it if you try to teach yourself. Even if you think you have made a good weld it might be weak.

It is probably better for most people to pay a pro do do a bit of welding on a vehicle than purchase their own gear. I have seen some right disasters in the past.
