PostPosted: 09:58 - 17 Nov 2005    Post subject: North france - worth touring? Reply with quote

I tried posting this in the touring forum but so far no replies Razz
Im thinking of doing a bit of a tour along the cost of northern france next year, running pretty much parrallel to England. Has anyone toured this part of France and is it worth doing?
Cheers
Chris

Been through france about ten times or more in my life, we only went to the south where the weather is actually different from england. Laughing

Only the weather would make me more inclined to go to the south. Smile

I have been through northern France in a camper van on the way back from Amsterdam.

It's good if you're into war history etc there's a few sites/museum.

The roads don't stray too far from the coast and you can't get lost.

from what I remember though it is quite industrial, you may as well head south for better weather.

Take a trailer/sidecar and stock up on booze!

McJamweasel and Karen Moomin did France on the bike.

This thread tells you all about it.

Disagree. Thumbs Down

What's wrong with riding through France to get there? It's fantastic as long as you keep away from the motorways.

Once we got off them at Troyes and onto the country roads it was an utter blast. Very scenic, bugger all traffic, fab little villages and towns to stop at and have a bite to eat or drink at.

On the way back we did more cross country and it was great fun.

I went last month with my dad, had a great time Thumbs Up

We went from dover to calais for £40 return, then took the coastal roads for 200 miles, before we hit the motorway. Some of the roads through the country side were amazing, snaking around the hills.

The whole point of the trip was to go see the d-day beaches, aswell as the towns that were affected and the memorials, All in all it took us 1 day to get to caen, we spent 1 day exploring and it took another day to get home.

Point de huc was amazing, a preserved site were the americans bombed the shit out of france.

I did a mini-tour of N. France just this summer - by car mind, but there's a lot to see. Highlights of Normandy are the D-Day beaches/cemetery (Not too many relics but you get a sense of the achievment), Bayeaux (And tapestry), Le Mans, Amiens, Versailles, Rouen. I could go on. Coastal roads follow the D-Day trail and you can read signs along the way that expalin what happened here and there.

Brittany is even better. Fantastic scenery and great little seaside towns that have all the charm without the cheese. Mont St Michel is stunning and the abbey is well worth the visit. Just don't eat there! Thumbs Down

Avoid the bigger towns too e.g. Caen, Le Havre and the Calais area around Pas-du-Nord - a bit boring really. Some wonderful roads though and quite empty compared to UK. Probably not on par with the rest of France for truly outstanding vistas but still great fun.

Top idea; it's something I've thought about myself, mainly for the history of the area but also the camping aspect with some good nosh and vino would make it a fun trip. No firm plans myself yet but either next year or year after is a strong possibility

did europe in september, including coming through northern france quicker than adolph in '39 Smile

great sites to see, some wonderful cathedrals, nice people (helps if you're fluent) and a great, laid back and nonchalent attitude towards life.

the alsace region is a good place to visit, good roads, food and i'm told they brew a bit of 'bier blonde' that way. cracking campsite in saverne.

not sure about the north of france, think the weather can sometimes be abit dull, south of france is nice tho. got some great twisty roads and nice long straights + the weather is always great down there too.

what kinda bike will you be thinking of touring on? and are you going with any mates?

just thought.... they also have a kickass gokarting track there to (south of france) long as you were passing the town nice.

I wouldn't say no to a bit of riding in the north of France. Really like France. Would love to go one day, and what better than on a bike...
