my dad didnt want me getting a bike, hes really safety consious about me, my moms dad used to have one but came off enough times so they didnt want me to get one, but after a year of saving money and my room filling up with bike related material they realised i really was determined so they didnt try and stop me.
My mom always wants me to phone her when i have got somewhere so she knows im ok and my dad hes cool with it now he says but me and my mom thinks hes secretly jealous of me and my bike but yea just tell them its not the end of the world.

Neither of my parents would help me finance the beast and were generally against the whole thing from the start. My grandmother still often says she's afraid for me, etc. Over a year in and still alive. Thumbs Up

A funny aside: Shortly after a I got my Gixxer, my dad bought a Goldwing. The second bike he's owned since my birth. Thinking

Most of my family know, except my mum. Primarily because she worries, like mums do.

My plan is next year when I've got a 'big' bike, to ride up to holyhead, get a ferry over to Ireland and show up on her driveway and break it to her that way.

She'll probably beat me to death witha rolling pin or something.

Might leave the helmet on and the engine running now that I think about it...

Oh, and I'm 31...

Mine didn't mind at all. My da has always had bikes about him and my ma never worried and they both supported it, ie my dad letting me use his GPZ500 and my mum taking pictures of me on it etc. Embarassed

My mum paid for my cbt and my first ped. She then lent me the money for my second bike and my dad went guarentaur on my third at 19 so i can't say i've had much trouble on that side of things. Only thing they have always insisted on is that i have full bike gear on whenever i go for a ride which is ok since they lend me the money for any new bike gear i need so that im safe.

I had to move my parents bikes to get my 125 in the garage.

Parents were very supportive, they were also happier with me on a 600 than a 125.

Dad paid for my 125 insurance, he also paid for the bandit, and he's put in countless hours maintaining/fixing my bikes.

I saw the appeal after riding pillion on a Blackbird last year. To liven up the daily routine, I decided on a whim to do my DAS.

Both parents have been totally cool about it. Neither ride bikes and I'm 24. Even took my mom out pillion - she could see the attraction. Life's too short - yes it's dangerous, but you can spend too much time in life over-analysing everything. Better just get on with the things you enjoy doing and take reasonable precautions where possible (i.e. wearing the appropriate stuff).

One last thing... my mom did say she was happier that I'd been driving for a good while (since 17) so at least I've developed a decent amount of road sense. I have to agree that whilst I wouldn't prevent a son / daughter of mine riding a bike, I would want them to have had the experience of driving for a few years first. I think this more so after seeing the total lack of road sense shown by two 16 year olds with whom I did my CBT.

Seriously, you're 25. You're old enough to drink, smoke, have something up you (poetic) and vote. By law you're classed as an adult. Who cares what your folks think, tell them to fuck off and if they want to worry about something, tell them that George W Bush has a monkey that controls his right arm and is always pouncing on the big red button. Worse things can happen. Personally I'd rather fly though the air and hit a tree then be stuck in a car and burn to death.

My folks encouraged it being both bikers themselves. Got my sister into it when I took her for a 2 hour spin around London showing her the sights (well, Monument 3 times!). Mrs Mantzy's Mum hates it and hates the thought of her daughter on it, but her dad is an ex biker who secretly wishes he could ride again. Think I'll take him for a spin, I sense a midlife crisis coming on and i'm there to encourage it.
