PostPosted: 17:27 - 29 Nov 2005    Post subject: CBR 600f Battery Problems??? Reply with quote

Every now and then my bike will not start even sometimes when the bike is warm.

How do I check the starter motor is working properly? (nowt silly by saying if it starts)
How do I check the alternator is charging properly?
Any loose connections I may need to check?

This happeneded before, so I bought a new battery but the problem is back and now becoming more frequent.

I use the bike monday to friday for 50 miles each way so it's not underused and it dopesn't happen every couple of days, sometimes it won't happend for weeks.

First check all the plugs make sure they are all firing and in good condition looking for a browny colour Thumbs Up. Then check to see that the battery is holding its charge, charge it up then leave it for a day or two and test it to see if it has gone down, then when the battery is being charged it is being charged at 2.0Amps per hour, if its more than this then your over charging your battery and it has probably ruined the cells in your current battery, if this is the case make sure your regulator/rectifier is still working and replace the battery.
I have had a few honda regulator/rectifier's play up and over charge batteries so i wouldn't be supprised if this is your problem Thumbs Up
Hope this helps, and let me know how it goes, Dan

look at the contacts to see if they are covered in soot, if they are clean them with a wire brush. have a look in the sticky thread in the workshop section for your bike maintenance manual, thats what im using. it has fault diagnosis and easy to follow steps.

could be just a loose wire in the ignition wiring, i know mine had that, if you turned the handle bars, the ignition would cut out.

explain exactly what happen when it wont start, in as much detail as you can,

eg, i put the key in, i turn the key, the lights on the dash come on, i press the starter button,,,,etc

1. Turn Keys, lights come on.
2. Press starter bike turns but doesn't fire at all not even a little bit
3. Can be bumped if warm
4. Battery dies
5. Whack it on the oxford optimiser
6. Plug in Starts fine
7. Sometime weeks later goto step 1

Also clean out the carbs, make sure there are no jets blocked etc... and does your battery go flat because of tryin to start it for such a long time or does it go flat almost after a few turns of the starter motor?, Dan

Yeah it helps not to have a lot of dust around whilst cleaning the carbs but I do it all the time in my garage, as long as you make sure all the jets are clear and that your idling speed is as it should be, if they are you should be getting enough fuel through to start it Thumbs Up

Ss stated check your Regulator/Rectifier it will kill the battery so if it has gone , replace battery and the reg/re if you have discounted this being the problem check the alternator . Most likely to be the reg/rec though.

Hi

Put a voltmeter over the battery with the engine running and see what it is showing. Should be ~13 volts (probably a touch over) at idle, and around 14.5v when revved. You might well find that the voltage is through the roof (although I would expect that to cook the battery), or is quite low.

All the best

Keith

Yes, do what kickstart suggested as this would show that it is probably your reg/rectifier at fault Thumbs Up
