every corner on my cx500 in the wet

once on teh bridge chicane type coner on the woodhead, went in too hot and paniked, lucky for me i straightend but almost got stuffed up the arse from the following bike who was too close and shat his pants more,, (never follow anyone)(gpz900)

once coming from the woodhead pass to glossop where theres a nice jump into a tight left hand corner leaving you no time to break if your not expecting it,, big walls getting bigger moment, zzr1200

a time on the snake, over cooking corners, skimming the white line with a truck abotu a foot away from killing me once, (bike was still new to me)

summer time in fog on the snake, hitting a big patch of oil from a recent crash on the approch to a corner just after the summit, usual car way too close up my arse moment, skidding with both tyres,

and then last week, blizzard on snake pass, snow covered road, no grip, no feeling in my feet or hands so no brakes, car up my arse and slippy sliding everywhere,, propper life changing moment,,

Carpe diem

I love the snake pass, its a great ride but wont forgive mistakes

I've had a few 'oh s**t' moments on my R6. The two most memorable ones are:

1. Riding along a winding country lane following a woman in a car which had also been following a tractor for a few miles. The woman driving didn't seem to want to get by the tractor even when she had ample to chance, so on the first opportunity I had to overtake them both safely I gave the R6 a fistful of throttle and as soon as I was committed to the move, the woman in the car decided to pull out too. Now this is a country lane where there was only just enough room for the car to be side by side with the tractor never mind me as well. So picture the scene as I am level with her rear wheel arch, hard on my brakes (with a pillion on too) and she is getting closer and closer pushing me nearer and nearer the verge. I managed to just drop enough speed off to avoid her car and the verge but only just. Anyway my pillion was ranting and raving about the car driver and the 'stupid' manoeuvre that she had done but to be fair it wasn't all the fault of the car driver. I should have known better and anticipated that she may overtake at that time, and with the acceleration of the R6, when/if she had checked her mirror I was probably still riding behind her normally.

2. Coming off a roundabout I had used a few times on my bike before I was nailing the throttle and giving it some stick. I negotiated the roundabout fine, flicked the R6 right over to take the exit and as soon as I had left the roundabout the road surface became incredibly bumpy. It was enough to make the bike bounce sideways (bearing in mind the angle I was at) towards the empty oncoming traffic's lane and was a real 'oh s**t here we go' kind of moment. I managed to keep on the R6 probably more by luck than judgement, cos it was doing its best to unseat me, and managed to recover it back onto my side of the road and upright too. A real 'phew that was close' moment after that.

I was chased tonight by two 20 year old blokes in a car in a multi storey car park, for reasons that are unknown, but Im trying the best I can to get away from them, bearing in mind that the surface was slippery and I had 2 wheels to their four, they were always going to be on my arse, nearly knocked me off on 2 occasions, but I did all the work for them and lowsided it turning off a ramp and back wheel span in a puddle. Im 100% pissed off about it.

I'd only had the 125 a few months and was hammering down a back road, slowed down a bit to 50 cause the sun went in my eyes, next thing I was heading straight for someones pillar, didn't see a corner at all. Stopped in thier driveway. Laughing

That reminds me of a time I was flying down a backroad aswell, sun blinding me, turning round a corner and a transit van comes past me. Scared the shit out of me because I didnt see the van at all.

Well aside from my accident, i was in a major queue following an old couple in a Corsa. I went to overtake and when i got back into the lane, i saw a builders flatbed truck, quickly trying to reverse out before the traffic caught them up. I had to slam the brakes on an ended up about 6 inchs betwen my face and the truck! Confused

In the last two years i have had a few times i have went chock white.

Ist Year, Honda Varadero 125 (good first bike)

1) On my 125 varadero i did not have the power to overtake that fast so i blame that factor Laughing nearly hit a truck head on when i was overtaking a Volvo.

2) Really heavy rain and a van went halfway round a bend and decided to stop, i was going to fast and grabbed the front brake, down i went. TBH it was lucky i did go down either that or i would be taking my imprint out the back of the van.

3) Filtering through traffic about 30mph i was just passing a truck and a black taxi decided to u-turn and hit me side on T-bone. The bike was fine, managed to hold it up right but my leg took the full brunt of the taxi bumper, was off the bike for a while.

There has been a few more but don't want to bore you of them.

Year 2 Honda CBR 600FY

1) On the A9 flat out chasing a yellow sports car in the dark i noticed the car swerved really hard onto the other side of the road, must have been about 120-140 (2 scared too look and see the speedo) 2 secs later i see a black blur in front then hazards lights flicked on once (crapped it and leaned hard to the right and just missed the rear end of the car). Was shaking for about 15 mins. Sick

2) After i got up the A9 then up to Ullapool, was a cracking fresh day, went out for a run on the country roads (really nice fast roads). The road was totally clear going around the side of the hill, so hammered the bike and then it went to a long straight going down with only fields to the left and right but the road was raised so big ditches at the side, was only doing about 80MPH then the hit me from the bottom of the bike, Sick really bloody hard and the front nearly went, made me snake a bit then i dropped to 20MPH and the wind was so bad i turned the bike around and put me big belly hard on the tank to try and keep the front in control.

3) Hit the throttle do hard coming out of a roundabout and nearly high-sided myself off the bike

Thats been about it for me, not too bad Laughing Wink

going down dual carriage way at 110mph and hitting a curb head on when the two lanes split, totally cleared an 18" raised manhole cover landed on the grass verge and slowed to a stop keeping it upright all the time, while on the grass, all i could say to myself was "don't brake!". Grass tracking at 110mph on road tyres only produces brown adrenalin!

totally knackered me wheels though.

Worst was.... my mate followed me but being a fat git he didn't make the manhole, GS 750 all over the A38, took us hours to collect all the bits.

As for my mate he suffered severy abrasions but no broken bones. The doctors said his fat probably saved him!

Pulling out to overtake a coach in belgium. I pulled out, give it a big handful of gas & the next thing the bars were violently shaking from side to side & I was using 2 lanes up. This went on for about 50 yards or so. When the bike settled I looked behind me and saw that the rest of the group of bike I was with had all pretty much slowed to a halt as they were expecting me to be thrown from my bike at any moment...
Had that happen on 2 other occasions, but without being near other traffic. Still bloody scary though....I'll have to buy a steering damper one of these days!

i have those "Oh Sh*t" moments all the time. 3 of them stand out tho

1st one was when i had my Honda CBR 125 and i was on my way to meeting up with some of the guys from the Scotland section for a ride out, i had just finished work and had to rush home and rush to the meeting point, i was thrashing the CBR Laughing to get their on time, i was approching a bend which had traffic lights immediatly after it and i wasn't thinking and i just kept on the gas when i suddenly noticed the lights were red, i snatched the front and stood on the rear brake and had both wheels locked sliding through the lights heading towards oncoming traffic. lucky for me that all the cars stopped and i manged to stay up because i was right in front of them when i stopped. this was a busy junction at rush hour btw so i had a packed audience for it. i pushed the bike back to the line and let my visor fog up so no one could see my red face Embarassed Laughing

the next 2 have been on the GSXR, this one happened on my way home from a ride out (anyone seeing a pattern here?) i only had the bike a week and i was still getting used to it. i got held up in traffic and when i finally got passed them i had a bit of catching up to do so i pressed on at speed, on approching what looked like quite an easy corner i only slowed down a little but half way round it suddenly got really tight so i paniced a bit and started to brake which of course made the bike stand up. i ended up a way out on the wrong side of the road and narrowly missed the side of a hill Rolling Eyes

3rd time was just a few weeks back, missed my cut off on the motorway so i gunned it to the next exit, i shot into the next exit at 100MPH forgetting that this exit had a sharp left hander. so i had to brake heavliy and in the wet too. back wheel was skipping off the ground and waving about.
