Hi, need some advice about riding abroad. I'm planning to do some rides around Europe this srping. I'm not sure what things need to be arranged to take the bike abroad. I know my insurance will cover me for riding within Europe with breakdown cover. But how about things like road tax for foreign countries? Do I just buy a ferry ticket for me and the bike and just ride over? And do I need to take any of my bike's documents? Thanks

Most of this should cover it.

You will need to take the original copies of your bike log book, insurance and driving licence

Wrong forum Razz

You basically take all of your bike's documents, plus some photocopies as well. The best way to book your ferry is through https://www.ferrysavers.com/ and you will get the best price if you take a ferry at 5am or a similarly ungodly hour. You do not need anything else other than your passport and license.

It is essential to have some kind of mapreader such as you get on a tankbag, and a half decent folded map. Unless you speak the local lingo, take a phrase book (Lonely Planet do good ones, think they are only £3.50 new). A guidebook is a very good idea, which will tell you where accommodation is, plus lots of interesting sights which you wouldn't otherwise know about.

To stay in youth hostels you are best to join the YHA. Think there are some camping associations that you can join as well for small benefits. Make sure the bike is adequately serviced before you go, and do not overpack.
