How many revs should you use when pottering around town?

The bike always feels slightly juddery and faulters sometimes as if the engine wants more.

Like driving my car, I am in 4th gear at 30-40mph.

Am I in a too higher gear, would a busier and revvier engine give more stability?

In the complete contrast to this, where should most of the power be on the rev counter when hammering down the road.

I am worrried that I am changing up to quickly without getting the most out of the gears.

I a sorry that these are very learner type questions, but as far as I can remember, we weren't taught what gears to be in (except 1st)

If your engine's strugling then change down until you get a good response from the throtle. It all depends on the bike and it's size. Thumbs Up

Depends on the bike/engine layout/mood/traffic.

Find out what your bike feels like at different engine speeds/road speeds and work from there. A big 750 4 (is yours a ZXR?) should be happy in 2nd or 3rd at 30/40 - maybe even first (don't know how tall the gearing is).

On the Blade, pull away in first to 30mph, then just snick into 2nd, though it'll happily pull in 3rd from about 2,000 (though I don't do this as it unneccessarily stresses the engine).

Yep its a 750, I dont think I stretch out the gears enough. The engine does sound better around town in 2nd or 3rd

You're in too high a gear mate for definte.

Im usually sitting at between 5-7000 revs in town and 8-10 on the open roads. (750 V4)

Use lower gears but be prepared for the improved throttle response Very Happy

Really depends on your bike and what mood you're in.
I can empty a tank of fuel in 90 miles or in 140...both feel equally right and it doesn't mean I'm riding the bike wrong.
Just be careful not to labour the engine. Don't give it too much throttle at too low a rev - when you can really feel the bike judder and struggle. I hear that causes the most stress on the engine.
