recent posts on this forum has got me thinking about religon in general, in fact about what would the world be like without religon?
it seems most wars/hatered (the i'm right your wrong attitude) is caused by religon. if it didn't exist in any form would the world be a peaceful planet or would we just be a bunch of barbaians as we woud have no values and took what we wanted when we wanted

No I think most wars are caused by money. Religion is used as a pretext but there's always somebody in the background pulling the strings, stirring up hatred and making a shitload of money. If it wasn't religion it'd be something else.

good point.
i reckon that we would be ok without religion. We survived for a very long time without it.
but are you talking about a world where we have never even thought of religion or a world where we know about it, but try and ignore it ?

Religion gives people hope. False or not that's a good thing probably. The grief it causes isn't.

There was something Ghandi said about this ,

If all Christians acted like Christ, the whole world would be Christian

But then again an often used arguement by theists is that atheists have killed more than religions

(Mao 60+ million more than ALL dictators , Stalin 20-50million)

Religion is one of the best things to ever happen to humanity.

Faith. Something so powerful it can control millions of people under a set of basic and outdated laws. Something that people can believe so passionately they will have wars over it. Something that people will cling to and use to keep going when there really is no good reason to go on.

Without religion we'd fight over somethingelse, and if all religion disappeared overnight people would think it up again tomorrow, because its wonderfully comforting to think theres a bigger power behind the scenes, and there are answers to the big questions, we just aren't allowed to know them.

Religion was simply invented to control the masses when most were illiterate and uneducated, now its just big business and the scapegoat of warmongers . we'd be better off without all the sectarian crap it brings with it.

If religion wasn't around it doesn't mean to say we would take a step backward in civilisation, as the majority are now litterate and have some education. In fact I would argue the opposite, religion is actually holding us all back. Countries with common faiths very rarely go to war with each other, so no religion as standard would lead to less war.

And it would take away Dubyas easy route to securing Haliburton contracts in the Middle East!

Snivelling pricks.

exactly, thousands to hundreds of years ago, when things couldn't be explained, like thunder/lighthing, Floods, forest fires, disease's people needed somhing high and mighty to blame it on. Today it doesn't cut the bread. we know why a lot of things happen, fair enough some we don't but eventually we will.

one thing i hate most is when people go on loud speaker to "Brain wash" you with there beliefs, and force leaflets in your hand. up until a few years ago i'd of taken the leaflet and dropped it in the bin around the corner. but that was short lived now i point blank refuse it, and at certain times gotten angry and gave out some abuse about tryin to give me somthin i didn't want. religion is deff a thing of the past, we need to concentrate on 1,making our roads better Very Happy Very Happy, 2,check to see if this global warming thing is actually true :p, 3,kick out illegal immagrants on the spot , no reason needed 4,i can't think of anything else just now. i think i'll go back to bed

You got that right, just look at the balls up with stem cell research being held back in the US etc. & all the fuck ups with the US & the Vatican opposing condom use in Africa...

If ya want to read a REALLY good book about what a mistake religion is have a look at End Of Faith by Sam Harris.... He has a few choice words for the mainstream cults like judeo-christian bullshit & the muslims etc. Some priests have actually jacked it all in after reading that book.
Highly recommended. Thumbs Up

I think religion has now served its purpsoe and isnt that useful, but the basis of civilised society and obeying laws comes from religion.

Without religion we would still all be either hunting and gathering food and starving when there isnt much, or farming just enough to survive and starving when food reserves run out.

I think you could argue that the way communism was implmemented in Russia and China was like a religion (burn all heretics etc), so its an honorary religion.

Much is carried out in the name of religion with being about religion. It is a way to control a large group.
I do not think much would change. Humans tend to join a group and then pick on another.

I think region is the big one at the moment but for all the sense it makes it might as well be football clubs, colour, nationality, transport choice, eye colour or anything else you could use to identify one set of people from another.

Regards
C

Hi

Religion itself is just a system of beliefs, and as such I can see nothing really intrinsically good or bad about it.

However religion is abused by those who seek power and acts as a crutch for those who are not prepared to show tolerance of those who beliefs are different. On this second point atheism can certainly have some of the down sides of religion.

All the best

Keith

Religion is not necessarily the problem. It's ambiguity in places may be, but I dont think so.

What is the problem? People. Religion is a 'valid' excuse used by people who appear to have been brainwashed. Without religion people would still do the same, just with a different excuse, 'valid' or not.
