Hey all, when the weather brightens up i am going to rebuild my engine (cbr125) and go over the whole thing with a fine tooth comb as to say. I will be setting valve clearnces as accurate as possible and advancing the cam 4-8degrees to help mid range.
Also while its in bits i thought id polish up the ports to help things a little in that respect.
However i have a polishing kit that makes stuff shiny. Sounds about right huh?
But when you polish a port you DONT WANT IT SHINY! the aim is as smooth as possible without adding a shine to it. The reason being petrol vapour starts to seperate and petol collects on the walls and roof of the port as condensation (regardless of temp) occurs.
how the hell do i make my port smooth as posible without maing it shiny?

tbh, doing that to a CBR 125 engine sounds like a long winded, and pointless exercise. Neutral

Ahhh but you see, its HIS bike. I only have an RX50, but i care for the thing as much as the next biker cares for his brand new 06 R1. Has it ever made a difference to you what YOU ride? Im sure you loved almost every bike you had, just because its yours.

If I was you I'd go and find a cheap spares or repairs job off of ebay or something similar, and do the work on that engine.

Remember the old motto, If it ain't broke, DON'T fix it

People might have a bit more faith if you demonstrated SOME fucking clue about bike parts. It's called a "Cylinder head" FFS

Well sorrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeee Exclamation But up here we just call em top block's, you can phone a shop and order a "top block" etc Granted lots of people call them cylinder heads, but with an OHC the cylinder head isnt really the head of the engine now is it?
The rocker cover is the top most part of an OHC. Hence "top block" because it is blocked shaped not like a rocker cover wich tend to be a lot more flat

Maybe not the way to do it (never tried myself) but could you not polish it then 'dull' it off again using some slightly coarser grinding compound?

no its not part of my head you muppet, i havnt crashed that fast yet..............
okay you call your helmet a helmet, we call ours a lid......by we i mean, its a slang name if you like, that many people use
What i call my parts and what you call yours is of no relevance to this disscussion.

Lots of mechanic's and workshops use improper terminology and "nicknames" for parts and tools, so why should I have to type the fucker's out just to please you? Every fucker else new what a "top block" was, even if they wouldnt call it that themselves.

You may call it a cotter pin i call it a split pin. Whats the fucking difference? Ask for one you get the same thing.

You want the exhaust ports smooth and shiny. The inlet side you want rough rather than smooth, aids swirl or something technical like that I believe?

Just to stop you both bickering, please referr to the American: English translation section in your haynes manual.

In the UK I would do up a set screw on my mudguard with a 13mm spanner.

In the USA I would tighten a bolt on my fender with a 1/2" wrench.

Different terms, same thing.

But your CBR is worth something... and the engine is designed to make 14.5bhp and be hard to tune. Its built down to a power.

If I were you I'd buy a 125cc crosser engine and tune that.

Then if you want you can put it in your CBR.

If it isn't because you want to tune, but because you want a faster bike, then either buy an NSR125, an Aprilia RS125 or do your test.

I reckon you could get 30+bhp from a crosser engine, possibly more. And as such you would have one of the fastest 125s around. At the end of the day if you want a faster bike, buy a bigger bike. Karma
