I am still angry with them. Why should I have to write to them to tell them I am not a thief? I ignored the letters because I really didn't like they way they were talking to me truth be told. You should see the harassing way they write the letters.
I have a feeling that even if I let them into my house they are going to try and charge me. I probably have an aerial but have no choice as it is rented. We have a blanking thinky-me-bob on out aerial box so there is no way of plugging a cable into it.
and no Mr.Everready I never watch tv as it is truely awful.

If they come around, open the door and ask for ID. Tell them that you’re just going to check it, shut the door and come back in 15 minutes informing them that you suspect that they are impostors and you will be sending their ‘fake’ id to the real tv licence people.

Never dealt with them , but they used to blitz the uni halls. That was a joke as they are not allowed to look in cupboards, so everyone put their tv’s in their cupboards.

For all their claims to have 'TV detector vans' they only seem to be able to achieve enforcement by harrassing people who bought a Licence the previous year and haven't renewed it (or were stupid enough to fill in their real address on the form the shop gets you to fill in when you buy a telly). Even to the point of threatning to obtain search warrants (why would you need one of those if you have a detector van?).

Pretty sure MarJay, who's apparently in the know, confirmed that these detector vans don't exist.

I remember years ago I was staying at my g/f's on my own for a while. They didn't have a licence but had a TV anyway. One day the door went and it was an official looking guy with a clipboard. They had been getting warning letters from the licesning people, so I shat myself and shouted to him that I would be there in a minute while I ran around the house trying to hide the TV in a cupboard.

Turned out he was the gas man! Laughing

It is perfectly simple. Do not fill in your real address on the form they give you.

Ignorance or arrogance (in your case) is not an excuse.

Got a TV?

Got a Video recorder ?

Got a Digibox ?

Got a SkyBox ?

Got a TV card on your PC ?

You pay for the TV licence. It's that simple.

There is no escape. They caught me 4 years ago and an inspector turned up on my doorstep. And, they're legally allowed to enter your premises Confused

Just pay up.

If you can watch telly of ANY sort, you will NOT win. Evil or Very Mad

What if I only use a TV to watch videos/DVDs/as a monitor for my games console? Do I still need a licence?

You need to notify us in writing that this is the case and one our Enforcement Officers may need to visit you to confirm that you do not need a licence.

I keep having letters off the TV licencing people saying that they think I have a TV therefore i need to get a licence. I do have a TV yeah but the annoying thing is that I HAVE a TV licence. I have told them this but they letters keep coming!
As some one once said to me... You don't get the police giving you final warnings because you might own a gun but you don't have a gun licence (they want some sort of evidence before they go searching), Whereas the TV people assume everyone must own a telly whether they have the licence or not. Providing you are certain you don't need one argue!

Sam.

Television licence inspectors do not have a statuatory right of entry.

If you tell them they are not coming in, they are not allowed to. They can ASK to be allowed in but you do not have to let them. They can only legally gain entry to your premesis if you either give them permission or if they are executing a search warrant. If this is the case, they would be accompanied by a police officer.

I referr you to a statement of evidence given to the Commons public accounts select comittee on this very subject:
Quote:
Can I ask you about visits. I start by addressing this question to Ms Street. When a TV licensing officer visits a premises, do they ask for access to those premises?
(Ms Street) I do hate to pass the buck but, with the Chairman's agreement, it is probably not a matter for me.
(Ms Patel) Enquiry officers do not have automatic right of entry unless they have a search warrant.

TV lisence is a form of tax now, it was in a newspaper, not sure wich one

Its a big rip off, at the end of the day, you should not be forced to pay for something that you do not wanty to watch, you are paying a lisence to view crap, even though you dont watch shityenders or crapynation street, or some dick head prancing around the jungle looking at ants and shit, and same goes for the reality tv shit

I cant not think of any other country that charges a one off lisence for watching TV, as far as I am aware they have PPV, are the BBC scared incase nobody pays to watch there shite, same goes for adverts, they scared incase no one advertises with them, I personally think the BBC is a load of bollicks, and the consumer should have the right to chosse what channels they want to watch, thats where PPV comes into its own, then I would just have to pay for shityenders for ower lass, coz the rest of it is absolute crap.

Problem is with the brits, we just sit back and moan about it, look how long it took for people to get off there arses about poll tax, and look at the council tax now, its higher fo christs sake

Its about time everyone on everyforum shuved an email to wherever it supposed to go, with there disconcerns, that would make news at ten Very Happy

Yes.

It's the same as a TV, but without a screen. TV licensing explicitly mention that you need a licence for TV cards in computers, but even if they didn't, you'd need one.

The only thing from bbc i watch is top gear.
I am not paying £120 a year just to watch top gear. Its good but not that good.

Only problem is my girlfriend insisted we get a license, now she is moving out, they will be onto me to get a license.

I knew I shdnt have let her get that license. As soon as you reply to them, they know the place is occupied. I think I'll just not answer the door and not reply to letters. I cant see them breaking the door down to search the house.

This thread has made me realise I am not alone Thumbs Up

I have had two bad experiences. But firstly I will say that I do get a licence and on balance don't mind too much...or I didn't until now. I pay for BBC digital channels I can't watch because in my area a free view box won't work without a new aerial. Evil or Very Mad

First experience.
I was working abroad for nearly 5 months and my licence expired about a week after I left so as I wasn't going to be home to watch TV I didn't renew it. Obviously.
When I got home I renewed it like a good chap and on receipt of the licence I noticed it had been back dated to the original date. Sounds like they assumed I was guilty. I phoned up an had a HUGE rant....very unusual for me....and when I finally let the bloke get a word in, they immediately agreed to change it to the date of purchase. So therefore they were in my view acting outside the rules.

Second experience was this year. I was a few days late in renewing. It was over xmas and got overlooked. Anyway I used their crappy credit card renewal line and the next day they phoned me at work to tell me I hadn't paid. I said I had and told them to stop calling me at work. No idea when I gave my work number!!! Better than home though. Anyway they couldn't check my story so phoned me back a second time a few days later. This time when I said I had paid the reply was..."oh yes, so you have" EHHH!!!!!

Ones things is for sure I am going to resist going digital for as long as possible.

Blimey such a long post........ Neutral Gosh this is like counseling
