my ubuntu install was fine, and it found my 5.1 sound card, and dvd drives and the rest of it (apart from wireless network card)

i think it's quite good, runs quicker then win XP, and is easier to use (in some aspects) still trying to work out how to change the look/feel though. lol

sometimes ppl wd ask if the pc wd run on linux and we wd have to say we cdnt be sure

the reason being sometimes there wd be problems with the drivers for devices running with linux

i may be wrong, but this could mean that with some hardware set ups you wd need to track down linux drivers for a particular device such as the dvd drive

anyone else heard of this ? or were we just being overcautious and wrong ?

Colin, most modern commercial installs come with most drivers on the CD's for the most common hardware. Also Linux can adapt drivers to certain jobs, like the ALSA sound drivers can be gotten to work on an unsupported card with abit of persuasion.

And even if they don't come with the install most hardware companies now have Linux drivers anyway like nVidia and ATi, and theres a massive open source comminuty developing drivers all the time.
And since the 2.6 Kernel was released hardware support has grown dramatically.

Cool

i do like ubuntu.

Try getting TV out running off an ATI card. That was my major stumbling point with Linux.

hours faffing around with the xorg.conf files.
Got it working in the end though, although not sure how I fixed it, which is probably a bad sign.

How can people say it is hard to install stuff on linux.
With Gentoo you can install almost anything with just 2 words. You don't even have to download any install files, it's all done for you... (easier than windows, kinda)

"emerge firefox"

Although I can't say that Gentoo is that user friendly Rolling Eyes

I must say after playing with Ubuntu for the last few days.

It isn't to user friendly IF your not willing to learn. It uses alot of terminal (MS-DOS) type writing and lots of file modifying. And using wireless networks is confusing (but you get there in the end).

my desktop currently looks like this (see attached image)

and is running alot quicker then windows.

I can also play Black and White (D3D Games) and MOH:AA. (just trying to get dreamweaver to work (is there a better alternative))

Although it is not to user friendly, EVERYTHING you need is on the web. just takes a bit of time.
