I'm after a laptop for around 600 quid. Where do you reckon I can get the best one for my money? It's just for general use, but I'd like to be able to play video on it at a decent quality.

I got an Acer with Turion processor for about £410 (I didn't pay VAT though.) It's a budget laptop, but it's the most performance you're going to get for the money.

Check out www.ebuyer.com, they have very cheap laptops. Thumbs Up

I'm not really getting al these different processors that are on the go. Confused How does a 1.7GHz M processor compare to, say, a 3.0 Ghz Pentium 4?

The new Athlon processors are Sempium (equivalent of Centuron) and Turion (equivalent of Pentium) and the new M processors from Intel are specifically laptop designed. Laptop processors are designed to perform well at lower speeds so they don't get too hot, so a 1.6ghz Turion or Pentium M is a good speed processor.

Depends on what you're doing, but although the clock speed is lower on the M processor it'll generally have twice as much onboard cache memory. Since the M processors are designed specifically for laptops, they designed to keep heat output and power useage down, obviously not a problem in a desktop.

Confused? Have a look here at the performance of differing clock speeds:

Check out what deals Dell are doing on their laptops; https://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/notebooks?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs

I got mine especially for using at uni (connecting to the wireless network etc..) so it isn't a beast of a machine but it does a good job. Use it for programming, converting videos (avi - dvd) and all the normal stuff.

Cost came to around the £500 mark. Thumbs Up
