The brakes *will not* fail. The ABS will fail, basic braking ability however, will not.

Currently, no, but there have been numerous design studies of cars using electronic control of the steering, brakes, acceleration, etc.

For example Mercedes were showing off a car to journalists (test driving it) with a joystick in the centre of the car to replace the steering wheel, brake and accelerator pedals.

While ABS brakes are meant to fail "safe" but that doesn't always happen.

All the best

Some are. The xm had power brakes that were boosted by the motor. The brakes certainly worked when the motor was switched off, but no where near good enough to slow the car down decently enough to worry the disabled ABS, and definetly not good enough if it was doing 80 MPH at the time. They run off the hydraulic system, through a series of spheres controlled by the computer, so you fry that, fuck knows what'll go down.

If pressure falls you have little to no brakes in an XM, and we know that because it happened once. Cars like the new MX-5 have electronic assisted power steering and some are nearing fly by wire control. This seems to be past the post now anyway as it doesn't look as though they adopted the system.

First of all, damn near everything on a
Citroen is hydraulic. There's an engine driven pump that provides the
main energy supply and for transient loads (short bursts) where the
power needed is more than the pump an supply immediately, each
subsystem has its own hydraulic accumulator. These are the fabled
Citroen green spheres, a 4" diameter sphere with a rubber diaphram
inside, pressurised with nitrogen. The nitrogen is compressed inside
the diaphram by hydraulic pressure, which it can release on demand.

the demand is provided by the computer. It would be unwise to release all the pressure due to a computer failure, non?

what about cars like the new vectra? they are not fly by wire they are full electric control, if the electrics cut out so does the brakes, not the smartest invention by a long shot, also if the device cant be aimed it could effect cars that are near the target.

why don't they just stick a harpoon gun on the top of patrol cars? sounds easier and would probably be more effective Laughing

Are you telling me that if I unplug the battery on a new vectra, the brakes won't function?

They won't fail!

Also, if you've got a non-essential electrical component bike running on diesel, would it even work?
Just pondering...

doubt it, sounds to be like their trying to come up with a different version of thoughs "car disablers" from 2 fast 2 furious, and i think they would also work much better Mr. Green

the beam would have to be very concentrated to reach the car and extremely directed, probibly wouldnt happen for bikes because if your inexperienced then your screwed and could come off at 100+ mph ending in your death, which would then equel headlines such as "new police system kills biker" and it wouldnt be used again (actually id think it would be pretty fnny if that happened... after all the time and research on it i mean not after the dead biker)

meh, see what happens i guess, just dont go buying a new sports bike Laughing
