I'm looking at getting a new set of (4) wheels.

Been having a nose about and have come across the Santa Fe.
Took one out for a test drive last weekend and quite liked it, although the performance (acceleration) was a tad disappointing.

It is a toy 4x4, 2.4 diesel, but comes with good spec.
It has a 5 year, unlimited milage warranty (very important in my high milage job - no good getting a 3 year 60k one)
also has leather interior, electric everything (mirrors, sunroof etc) heated everything (seats windscreen mirrors!) and loads of space in the back.

cd player, cruise control etc etc.

It seems pretty good value for £14000.

But......are they any good?
Should I be looking at any other cars (4x4 would be nice)?
It needs to be spacious (currently have Escort Estate), reliable, and within £14000 budget. Low milage would be preferable.

Suggestions please, Auntie BCF.

Dear confused from Portsmouth,

If you do high mileages why would you want a 4 wheel drive bus?
I think you need another estate, car handling/comfort with the practicality of the estate models.

A review of the santa fe here.......... https://www.parkers.co.uk/choosing/carreviews/review.aspx?model_id=342

Not brilliant by any standard.

My suggestion would be for a mondeo estate .... https://www.parkers.co.uk/choosing/carreviews/review.aspx?model_id=284

Hope that helps, and good luck reader..... uncle bcf.

Dear Uncle Hotspot,

Thank you so much for your words of wisdom.
I got carried away with the thought of joining the ranks of the 4x4 brigade (on a budget) and I am beginning to realise that I ought to go for a more sensible/economical car.

I tried to justify the need for the 4x4 by kidding myself that it was the perfect lump for dragging the boat about, but the Escort manages this quite well to be honest.

Ah well, another estate it is......

Many thanks for your help in this, very personal, matter,

Zeph

PS You aren't my husband are you? all he keeps banging on about is that Mondeo estate too!

OK lovebirds, heres an outsiders view.

Hyundai offer an unprecedented 5 year warranty - this is good

14000 for a korean car built by hyundai - this is bad

To be honest hyundai are getting better but are still seen as the poor end of cnstruction. Just three years ago they were making an 'executive saloon' called a sonata. The V6 model was pushing 20K brand new. If you were to buy that and try to get shot in three years time you would be facing a 75% depreciation on average. Thats a lot of cash.

They rattle, they fall apart and generally dont live up to the other cars in their class. The class for toy 4X4's is pretty fierce, there are well built motors out there like the Rav 4 etc that will last much longer and hold much more of your value.

On the other hand however a guy was selling a 1 year old 17K vauxhaull vectra for 9,500 on the notice board at work so I guess its all figuratively speaking. I just know I wouldnt have a hyundai at 14K or pay 17K for a vauxhall.

Maybe hubby is going the right way with the mond, as much as I hate fords. Wink

Okay maybe an Impreza estate Thinking

I have nothing against 4x4 I like them, I love to drive my mums xc90 it gets resonable gas milage etc.

But you drive any viehicle sensbily it will get good gas milage and last a while. My mates 1.1 c2 (which was wrote off) would get as low as 9 mpg when he ragged it.

McGee, please don't lose sight of the fact that I am a woman and so must have a car that has enough space for my womanly needs.

Dear confused,

I'm glad you've seen the light and your head is now ruling your heart.

Unfortunately I'm not in fact your husband, but to keep him happy I suggest dropping "ST220" into the conversation when searching for a car. Wink

Hi

While 75% depreciation sounds high, that is £15000 gone, the same as spending £30000 on a car with low depreciation that only loses 50% of its value over 3 years.

All the best

Keith
