Hi - my first post. Only just found this site good innit? Seems to be lots of knowledgable peeps on here. So here goes..
I have recently wired up a new set of grips on my 900 Divvy, but have not wired them through a relay. I have since read on this and other forums that strictly speaking I should have used one. Having visited a site which sells relays- can someone explain the differences in relays and what each connection acually does.

Normally Closed. 12 volt, 20 Amp with bracket
Make and Break. 12 Volt, 30 Amp with bracket.
etc etc
Which would I need for the heated grips.

Many Thanks
Spike

Should be fine with a standard 4-pin relay if you are using it to power-up and down the grips with the ignition. 'normally open'.

It isn't all that great but if you click the button marked "www" under this post it should take you there.

Actually, I had best have a look myself, haven't checked it is working for ages (did I mention it is a bit shoddy? Rolling Eyes ) Embarassed

I presume you were looking for the bit on soldering?

Yep - soldering that's right - thanks. I've used soldered joints in the past, but must admit for those grips I used them scotchblocks. They make em with a built in fuse holder too.
Bloody expensive though.

Cheers

These things?

They have a nasty habit of corroding when exposed to the elements.

Or are you using those fancy gel things? Never tried them myself.

Hi

A 20 or 30 amp fuse should be easily enough (think the heated grips only pull about 3~4 amps). For a cheap relay just go to a car scrappy.

Best place to wire then into I have heard is the feed for the rear brake light switch. Means that if you make a real mess of the wiring then you can just buy a new switch (a lot of rear switches include an inch or 2 or wiring). Use this as a trigger for the relay with a main feed frpom the battery.

All the best

Keith

You've got it - the one in the photo! The surgery took place under the seat so that is where it lives - so it may be ok -eh?
Sorry to go on but it occurred to me last night after studying your wiring diagram that I may be able to include my power socket. I wired this up several years ago for connecting a pump for airbed inflation. It was simply wired directly to the battery with an inline fuse. Could the power socket be incorporated in the same circuit for the grips using a different relay?

Thanks for the great response

No problem. You would probably get away with one relay, I would use a single-throw, twin terminal five pin relay. This has two seperate outputs, you could use one for the socket and one for the grips.

Most of them are designed to cope with 30amps, if you are drawing more than that it is too much anyway.
