Check the thermal paste on your heatsink if your using some if not get some artic silver or similar and use a fine layer not loads as that makes things worse.

If your heatsink has one of those transfer stickers then remove it and use some proper heat transfer paste as per the above.

Increase the flow of air which exits the rear of the case by adding additional fans and include a fan toward the front blowing cold air into the base.

Regards,
Kevo.

Thermal heat transfer paste. Basically the paste acts as the conduit between the processor and the heatsink. Creating a good transfer of heat between the two by sealing all the small cracks and holes between two peices of metal.

More fans more fans. That's what you need along with some new cpu goop.

Are you running you CPU at it's defined speed or overclocked?.

Kevo.

No it's not over clocked or anything; it's only a Pentium II with a 450mhz processor. I really should upgrade the motherboard and processor.

Right heres what i think you should do, drill a hole in the case, nip to macdonalds an get a straw tape one end of the straw to the cpu then poke the other end out of the case, then when it gets hot just blow on it

There really isnt much point in upgrading the pc mate, you may as well get a new one.

A pc is as slow as its slowest component, so upgrading the motherboard and processor may not make any difference at all.

Flog the old and get a new Wink

Mike's right, its not really worth just upgrading a few components. You can build a nice system these days for around £500, especially if you order from somewhere off the net like ebuyer.

Use the monitor from your old machine, or buy a new one so you can plan deathmatch Quake/UT over a LAN. You know it makes sense! Razz

I disagree, with a Pentium 450 you'll most likely have a GeForce 2 graphics card, TNT2 or an old ATI at the very least. That means a new motherboard, CPU, probably faster RAM and maybe a new Graphics card.... prolly about £200 for that lot, it's still cheaper than buying a whole new system.

As for the overheating, I personally wouldn't bother checking for thermal compound between the heatsink and CPU, CPUs usually come with some paste on them and if not the heatsinks nowadays are polished to a very smooth finish so contact is usually more than adequate. Either way, fans is the way to go as they will make the biggest difference. Also if your Power supply fan is on the way out it'll be generating more heat which will be heating up the inside of your case so that could be the cause if it's only just recently started overheating.

I don't need to upgrade the RAM 'cos i've got 523mb anywayz Very Happy I've also got a TNT 2 Ultra 32mb which could do with upgrading.

Bin it Very Happy If a P2-450's overheating you really need a bigger one.
I just specced up a machine for around £300 with a 333 XP 2600 512 DDR400 memory, 128mb GF4 graphics, 80g ATA133 drive etc.
You could get a decent system for £200 easily nowadays

Ammout of RAM isn't the issue - on a recent MBD and Proc setup, FASTER RAM will be needed maybe DDR and 2100 or 2700 sepc upwards.

it'll be 512 and he's getting the report in bytes not mega bytes

512Mb = 512*1024=524288 not far from what he's said esp if it's reporting free memory and some is used up by system files.

WTF can't everyone in the IT world use the same system - 1024 not 1000 bytes per Mb? Oh yeah that'll be because Misro$oft are wankers!!!
