Mad OMFG!

I hate windows.

Right this is how simple it is...

I have 1 PC, 1 Laptop, Both running XP Home.

1 Netgear Router running the internet, Laptop uses wireless card, PC is hardwired.

Both comp's connect to the Netgear network and have internet access.

Both comps show the other comps on the "network places".

Downstairs comp can access my shared files etc... But i cant access theirs.

Get an error similar to "You do not have permission to access these files" or something when i click the comp icon in "Network Places".

Why is this, and how do i sort it out?

Also i want some remote admin software for the network (free mind) if anyone has any suggestions once the network is sorted out...?

Go to network properties on each comp then on the network connection and allow access and sharing on this computer on each connection.
Btw just a side note if you have already done this, windows firewall in xp will every now and then hide shared folders for some reason, dunno why but it does.

Right click the folder you want to share, and check out the permissions.

Think Daz's tip of enabling file sharing should sort it, if not run therough the network wizard. Unless you're running a domain, I don't think the share permissions will be the problem (will just be Everyone - Full Control).

Probably not relevant, but I have a Win2K machine that had always required you to put in a username/password if accessing it from another machine. My brother solved that at the weekend by enabling the guest account.

Yup, running the connection wizard should sort out the permissions problem.

You're luckier than me, I have two PC's and a Laptop all going through a router, 1 ethernet, 2 wirelessly and I can't see any computers at all in Network places!

I just set up a home network yesterday by following the instructions HERE. Follow them and if you still have problems then make sure it's not a firewall issue.

The router is the modem..

The router connects to your PC, and that dials up to the net like your modem, apart from its always on mate.

how come i have been seeing the adverts on ebay aying that you need a ethernet connection modem and not a USB modem, look at this link -

You need a modem that connects via UTP cable, not USB. Some ADSL modems connect to PC's via USB. You canot connect to a router in this way, you have to use Cat5 cable. The other solution is to use an ADSL modem/router, which combines the two functions. Something like this: https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-SMC-SOHO-54Mbps-WIRELESS-ADSL-MODEM-ROUTER-OEM-BOX_W0QQitemZ5877875798QQcategoryZ44997QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

If you have a USB modem, you need to replace it with a wireless ADSL modem/router, as per above ebay link.

I'm a little unsure of what equipment you currently have.

As you can see from the crap diagrams, the modem router replaces the need for two devices. You cant connect devices using USB, you can only connect via USB to a computer.

Edit: UTP - Unsheilded Twisted Pair, standard cabling for Ethernet.

Right, I'm with you now.

Your MA111 adapters will work with any other wireless device once set up, so you don't need to worry about that. Dont get the MR814, it won't suit your situation. If you want to stay Netgear, you can get the DG834G. It's a modem, router and 802.11g wireless access point all-in-one, so you can put your current modem back in it's box, and keep it incase things go tits up. Even though your ISP may have provided you with the equipment, it doesn't mean you have to use it.

There are many other ADSL modem routers out there to choose from, but don't waste money buying a new modem and wireless router when you can get them both together.
