I have some Mpegs which have a resolutin of 624 x 352. Why is it when I play back these videos, on my widescreen laptop or on my widescreen Tv, they are letter boxed? How can I get rid of the black bars above and below the picture? Confused

I thnk they may have been encoded using a 4:3 aspect ratio. Swithching to 16:9 might help, but this means converting them first.

Just off the top of my head; I haven't dabbled with these kinds of settings before, just noticed their existence.

Depends on the films aspect ratio, have a read here and you'll see why you may get black bars.

Thumbs Up

No I don't think they are encoded as 4:3. The resolution of the video is 624 x 352 which is 16:9. When I play them on my desktop on a 4:3 screen they have black bars above and below the picture. When played on the widescreen, it's the same. Confused

Doesn't seem to be a player specific problem. I mainly use PowerDVD, but I have the same problem with windows media player. Sad
