Finally booked my test!!

So after riding a 125 for 19 months I have decided that I do not want the embarassment of redoing my CBT and am fed up of how slow my bike is so am booked in for my test.

I will be doing 2 days training over the weekend with the test on the monday. I am absolutely terrified but excited at the same time especially as I have a GS500 sitting in the garage waiting for me.

Couple of questions though:

What can I do to prepare for the training and test?
Is 2 days enough? (I know everyone is different but still).
Anyone got any helpful hints or advice?
Could everyone please cross their fingers for me?

I had my das on Monday and passed with 2 minors

If you can practice your emergency stops, as I found this difficult coz I kept skidding the way around it is to use only the front brake and just tap the rear (make it look like u are using it ) this worked a treat and I did about 8 test ones and did them all perfectly.
Practice U turns and make sure you check over your shoulder as you are about to do it.

Read all the road signs and make sure you stick to speed limits

My main bit of advise is stay calm and don't think of it as a test think of it as an assessment.

I had a 125 for 9 months as well (still have it ) you won't have any problems.

Don't worry, relax and enjoy it!

That is the advice everyone gave me, I followed it and did OK!

I would say have a look at the 'show me, tell me' and pillion questions and learn the possible answers if you don't know them. It not much, but at least it's something you can do in the frustrating wait between now and your training!

What time's your test for? You should be ok as long as you relax. Saying that though hopefully you haven't got it during a rush hour period as you can get screwed by other road users. Just forget the examiners eyes are on you and ride safely how youv've been told and you'll pass

I have to pass first time as the OH didn't and I need to beat him.

I did mine with 10 hours training; 2 lessons and 1 days' intensive. If I can do that, without ever having ridden a 125, you can certainly do it. I passed with 2 minors.

I had to do my emergency stop in the wet, so not applying the rear brake too much is definitely something I had to follow. For me the hardest bit was sorting out all my observations; they were in a proper mess. For every turn you make, be sure you're doing your shoulder checks. And if you think you've failed (I was absolutely convinced, honestly, I was absolutely prepared for him to tell me I'd failed) don't fall to pieces, just keep on going and regain your composure.

Your riding instructor on your 2 days training should be taking you out on the likely test routes and give you the opportunity to practice your u turns, emergency stops etc in the likely places where the examiner will ask you to do them. Practice the u turn, emergency stop, uphill start and pulling out from behind a parked vehicle until you know you can do it everytime.

Top tip my instructor gave me was to approach the test as an opportunity to show the guy how good you were rather than worrying about what you might do wrong. If you think you've made a mistake, carry on anyway, examiners do have a certain amount of latitude and if you produce a good performance overall, the examiner can use his discretion. My mate did ok up until the u turn, he put his foot down as he did it. The examiner just said to him, "sorry wasnt paying attention, could you do it again please". He nailed it second time and got his pass.

well mate i failed my 1st attempt at the bike test. 12 minors and 2 majors!!!! but i thought i had cocked up from the start and just blagged the rest of it.
i faile don steering and somethign else... lol but i got a retake on the 27th april, if i dont pass then i will scream!!!!!!!

I failed my first attempt also. For inappropriate speed. Said I was going too slow doing 25mph in a residential area with cars parked on both sides(!). I reckon I was robbed!

So my top tip is get to the speed limit and stick there even if it is against your better judgement (did I really just say that?).

My second attempt is next Monday.

Not to sound too much like a parrot, but: relax. The test isn't any more difficult than a short ride out. Pretend you're on a pleasure cruise and it'll be fine. If in doubt, hum the "Nelly the Elephant" theme... it does wonders for your nerves .

Just a few things I learned from two failed tests (either directly or indirectly):

Do do your observations (and make sure the examiner can see it, i.e. turn your head and don't just glance). It's a minor each time if they think you're not paying attention.
Do not speed. It's a minor each time you go over the limit and it can earn you a serious (i.e. a fail) if it happens too often or too much. Trust me, you feel like a right pillock if that's what you fail for .
Do get up to the speed limit, though, if it's safe to do so. Plodding along at 20 in a 60 zone will also earn you points.
The test isn't over until it's over. Never assume you have failed and keep going regardless of how much of a mess you may think you've made. A fail means more paperwork for them, so they'll avoid that if they can.
Both times, the examiner sounded like a borg drone right from the off for me. It's nothing to worry about.
It's only a minor if you get the question at the beginning wrong, so don't go crazy about it.
You're not out to impress the examiner, so don't even try.
You're being tested on your riding, not on your ability to follow directions. If you miss a turn, it's not the end of the world.
Pedestrians have absolute right of way at zebra crossings. It's an instant fail if you get that wrong .

Last, but not least, get a good rest the night before and have some breakfast. Regardless of how confident you are, the test will be stressfull so there's no need to give yourself an avoidable disadvantage.

P.S.: I failed on "Inappropriate use of speed" (repeated speeding: I was accelerating to >30mph several times after traffic lights before slowing down to the limit again) and not letting pedestrians cross (couple of minors, two serious) the first time. The second time was a speed issue again, but this time I was coming up far too fast to a round about (the end result of that maneuver was two serious points ). Both times I deserved what I got, though, so they are not unreasonable people.
