To be honest mate. 1400 gets you a lot of laptop Very Happy Personaly I'd go for a Sony Vaio as they look shit hot, otherwise a good IBM Thinkpad but I would say that working for IBM. Thumbs Up

Personal experience says HP/Compaq for build quality and performance. If size/weight is an issue, then Toshiba do some slick units.

Vaio's do look sexy, but they are way over priced for what they are.

If you're going to be doing a lot of photography-related stuff, I'd say either a Powerbook or a Vaio. A £1400 Vaio will knock your socks off with its performance, and they also have the best laptop screens in the industry. And a Powerbook definitely isn't far behind. It comes down to, in my opinion, whether you want to be Apple or Windows-based.

Vaio! Gets my vote if you have £1400 to play with. It's been a while since I dealt with laptops, but the Sony's were always the top choice. Expensive to fix, but very reliable and very sought after.

My Toshiba has been susceped to drug induced cranberry juice spilling (Involuntary drugs, might I add) and is still going strong, admittedly with an external keyboard.

Hmm, was an interesting night that, nearly broke my spine from doing a front dive down a flight of stairs (Without hitting the stairs) and flipping into a doorframe.

i used to use a sony about 3 years ago, the battery was not very good, after 3-6 months use, it would not fully charge and would only last 10-20 minutes. they cost a lot to replace as well. sony laptops are essentially for looks and style, not really a serious working computer.
