Yes folks, it's that time of year again. Despite months of downtime, painting of G's race bike is again left until the last 7 days before the race!

Step One - Friday Afternoon: Fairings and tank are all sanded down, mostly by hand as electric sanders aren't very good on curvy flexible surfaces. Number board areas are masked off and ages spent removing tank pad goo and slowly peeling off Suzuki decals with the aid of a hairdryer. Note the most important thing every - bunging up the hole in the petrol tank!

Step Two - Saturday Morning: Gazebo goes up in the back garden with Luke's help and all the sanded fairings are laid out for priming. The compressor is in the dining room in an effort to keep the noise down for the neighbours and a faint smell of burning permeates the entire house. Primer is mixed and loaded into MarJay's dad's spray gun... goes on nicely despite the increasing gusts of wind in the garden, with only a few 'oh shit, leaf!' moments. Couple of coats and everything's a lovely shade of shit brown.

Note, I'm wearing 2 fleeces under that shirt, I'm not quite *that* fat!

Step Three - Saturday Afternoon: The primer's dry so on to the colour. Unfortunately, we're still working our way through the stock of Humbrol Orange spray cans left from slight over-purchasing last season. Many, many coats are applied with me getting increasingly annoyed at the wind and the cold making it all harder than it should be. However, the 'it'll get thrown down the road soon enough' mantra stops me worrying too much about the odd bit of wonkiness, after all the R6 photographed beautifully even when half the paint had been melted off by clumsy fuelling.

Step Four - Sunday Morning: Blue skies and sun at 8.30am so I take the opportunity for a few more coats of orange. Then, once everyone's awake and I can run the compressor without being stabbed to death, lacquer time. Evil, evil stuff requiring a technique of 'spray a bit and run away before you suffocate' and making everything sticky. Apparently the whole house smells of it but by this point I seem to have lost my sense of smell completely. Three coats on the bike, about six on the tank (anticipating more clumsy fuelling) and it's all left to dry in the sun.

After the strangely satisfying removal of all the masking tape, we have...

Step Five - Final Touches: One trip to Halfords for some boy racer 'go-fasta' stripes and I spend a while outlining the number boards. Not keen on the orange and yellow right next to each other, plus the edges were a little rough in places.

Swaffs is cutting the vinyl 'sponsor' decals and race numbers as we speak - these will be applied once we get the fairings on the bike (gives me something to do on the practice day) so I'll update later in the week with it all looking bling before G goes out and lobs it down the track. Smile

You need a nice warm garage Bendy Wink

Good effort though given the conditions you had to work with, I wouldn't have fancied trying to spray outside this time of year.

Actually, G's bought himself several sets of black and orange leathers, as you'll see very soon.

Some might even say he's being a tart. Shocked

What has he been feeding on? Tarty leathers. New garage door. Tidied the garage. Its invasion of the body snatchers.

All the best

Err... actually G lobbed it down the track before it got bling. We didn't fit the new orange tank for Friday practice (thankfully) cos the bike came back from the 2nd session looking like:

However, all was not lost and I spent a few hours that night patching it back together with lino, fibreglass and gaffa tape. Also had to freehand another numberboard, as apparently it needed to be on the left hand side at Snetterton.

We got the orange tank on and as long as you took pics of the left hand side... there be bling!
