I beleive I may have 'shin splint's' as I get a severe pain in the front of both my legs even walking to and from work, about 5 minutes. I do alot of cycling which must be the cause of the pain, however when cycling I do not notice it at all. I am off to the doctor's on Thursday to try and confirm whether I have shin splint's, if I do what are the way's of curing them, or at least releiving the pain?

Cheer's for any help.

Edit: I do not intend to give up the cycling, infact I am going to do more and also some swimming once a week, so anything that involve's not doing exercise is not the ideal soloution. I realise this may not be possible.

No magic cure im afraid, just plenty of rest and ice. Alot of people get them and it is usually a sign of overuse so take it easy and get back to things slowly after a couple of weeks.

If your thinking of upping your training now they will get worse and start affecting your everyday life too.

They are usually associated with high impact activities such as running. Cycling is a medium or low impact Thinking

Quote:
The term shin splints refers to a painful condition that develops along the inside (medial edge) of the shin (tibia). The usual location is along the lower half of the tibia, anywhere from a few inches above the ankle to about half-way up the shin. The repeated running cycle of pounding and push off results in muscle fatigue, which may then lead to higher forces being applied to the fascia, the attachment of fascia to bone, and finally the bone itself. Respectively, this represents a spectrum from mild to severe. On the relatively more severe end of the scale the injury may progress from stress reaction within the bone to an actual stress fracture.

Medial shin splints is usually an overuse phenomenon that may be caused by

Arrow poorly fitting shoes
Arrow running on hard surfaces
Arrow running on cambered surfaces
Arrow hyperpronation when running
Arrow change of running pattern

The treatment for them is ERIC (or RICE):

Arrow Elevate
Arrow Rest
Arrow Ice
Arrow Compression

And, NSAID like Ibuprofen or diclofenac

Hope you feel better soon Thumbs Up

What I thought, but it's either shin splint's or I've fractured both shin's. Or are there other possiblities. The soreness/pain is right in the bone, and only when walking really.

Doesnt hurt when sitting down relaxing etc, or when cycling as mentioned.

I had it about a year ago - would get incredibly painfull whilst playing football. Had to rest up for a couple of months and I've never really had it since, although my shins are very sensitive if knocked.

I had shin splints for on and off for a couple of years when i used to play a lot of sport, and its not funny!! Only thing that worked for me was resting them and lay off the sport for a while. A sports physio recommended doing 'toe taps', that is sitting down with your heel off the floor and raising and lowering your toes. I found this made the shins feel tired after a while but seemed to improve the situation over time.

I get em halfway through football season but i carry on, il tell you what helped me though was those "support socks" them tight white bandages that you may put round your ankle if it was sore.

put them on your shins when you go to bed.

lol, to buck the trend here...

Shin splints only really occur in athletes who are running everyday, after a long period of time (like years). What most people experience is the actual muscle group on the shin becoming fatigued. Unfortunately its a fecking tiny muscle group so it feels much worse than say when you've been bench opressing and you chest muscles are fatigued.

Given that, if your cycling lots you might be working the front of your shins and top of your ankles and thus building the muscles up, which means when you walk your feeling this build up. Because realistically cycling will not cause shin splints and walking would not cause them either.

My shins burn like fuck after running 10 mile or so, but its not shuin splints, its simply the muscle group getting used to being worked and worked hard at that. It eventually goes away.

Remember, real shins splints is micro fracturing of the shin bone or the muscle group tearing away from the shin bone and its unlikely either of them will happen with moderate exercise, IMO.
