problems with brakes

I have tried to find my problem by the search facility with no luck,

ok have just over hauled my calipers put new dust and pistion seals in. put in dot 4 fluid still not getting any pressue unless I pump the lever a few times. if I leave it for a short wile i.e. 5 sec's the pressure is gone.


If my dad locks off one of my hoses it has instant pressure, if he locks of the other side no pressure. so we think the problem is with one of the hoses, any idea what it might be. or do we just need to keep bleeding the brakes, we have already gone through a bottle of brake fluid

Try cracking the bolt at the top of the system with lever held then tighten up again and release lever. Talking about the bolt holding the hoses to the master cylinder.

Hope your not throwing away the brake fluid if it's new, just put it back through.

will try thank you, if anyone has any other ideas please feel free to add, just to add I have also put new crush washers on.

what made me do the brakes was I almost droped my bike, the bike fell towards a wall I cought it but the lever still hit the wall and I think the pressure pushed a stuck piston out and as it had so much crap round it wouldn't go back in,
dont know if that has any bearing on your thoughts people, thanks again Thumbs Up

im sure the lever still had pressue after i tapped it,

Way too much, you're probably rushing it and just pushing any air up and down the pipes.

Some people recommend a brake bleeding tool (Myvic?) but I always use gravity and patience myself....

Push the pistons right back.

Leave the bleed nipples closed.

Turn the bars to the left.

Fill reservoir and slowly and gently squeeze and release the lever.

See the air bubbles coming back into the res?

Keep doing this (topping up the res as req'd) till you get no more air bubbles.

Tap all the connections with a screwdriver handle.

Take a break.

slowly and gently squeeze and release the lever.

See the big air bubble coming back into the res?

Fill reservoir and slowly and gently squeeze and release the lever.

See the pistons starting to move?

Fill reservoir and slowly and gently squeeze and release the lever.

See any air bubbles coming back into the res?

Yes? Keep doing this (topping up the res as req'd) till you get no more air bubbles.

No? Now it's time to use the bleed nipples to get any trapped air out of the calipers. Doesn't matter which side you start with.

Have you got a looped hose over the mudguard or two/three hoses running straight down?

I have two running straight down,

Have been trying the slow thing and yes the bubbles have come out, but still no pressure unless i pump, do you think its just traped air or could I have done the seals in the lever, if there is any Confused

You have to be really patient. If you still see bubbles it means there's still air in there and you have to wait for it all to rise to the top. Turning the bars is important as on most bikes the master cylinder reservoir is 'downhill' of the top banjo connection so there's a built-in air trap that won't go away.

Once you get no bubbles coming back into the res that means the hoses are ful and bled, now there's just what's left in the calliper. And while you've been doing the hoses the air in the caliper has had time to collect at the highest point - the bleed nipple. So it shouldn't take long to bleed that out - half a dozen squeeze/undo nipple/tighten nipple cycles should do it.

I don't know if this would help but I had the same problem with the BMW. It was due to me not having the pads parallel to the discs as it is a single pot swinging caliper on an eccentric pin that has to be set just right.

Or, have you refitted the old brake pads in a different position as they would have worn to the profile of the disc that they where in contact with.

Or, (and I have seen this) have you fitted the bleed screw to the bottom of the caliper rather than the top (air rises). I do not know if that is possible on your bike.

thanks for all the advice Thumbs Up , after leaving the brake tied up for 2 nights finally got some pressure, still got a lot of movement in the lever, so just ordered a set of steel hoses from busters, thanks to busters, cheers to you all Very Happy
