My 4 years in the RAF have set me up for life.

I bang on about this all the time, but if you are tempted by it, then just go and do it, what is there to lose? You can jump ship within the first few months if you really do hate it, when I joined, we had 6 months to make up our minds, and could leave at anytime before if we wanted to, but that was quite a while ago now.

Even in training, I was only away for a maximum of 3 weeks at a time, we could go home for the weekend after finishing the first section of recruit training.

The minimum time, if you stay in, is only about 3 or 4 years after finishing training. It's not that long if you really don't like it, and you always have to opportunity for transfers if you want to try somewhere else. I decided to leave after my second year, so I got a move nearer home, (200 miles away, instead of 400!) did another 2 years and then left.

I don't regret joining as it really has helped me loads, I just wish I joined the Army instead of the RAF, but there you go.

It needent be such a huge decision, if you want to do it, then just do. You can leave if you don't like it, and won't have lost anything.

Give it a crack. Wink

Been on Military Forums, and still dont have a clear cut answer as to when i get time off during training, i know in phase 1 its 6 weeks, long weekend off another 6 weeks then pass off, but then what?! Trade training is it like phase 1or is it different, i cant get a straight answere anywhere. All i got on Mil forum was

" Theres plenty of other women out there" thing is tho, thats not the answer i want to hear, i havent spent 3 years of my life getting everything near enough perfect with my gf just to finish it, for a crap reason.

Seriously mate, how many guys join up? Fucking thousands every year. They know the score, and your not a prisoner for months on end!

There are married guys joining, and the Army knows if they take the piss that no one will stay in. They are people too and know what the lads joining need. It's simple, if you don't like it, fuck the Army off and go back to your normal life. I think you'll like it though.

It will get hard, and you will get home sick, every one does. I hated my family, but still felt it. It's such a dramatic change to the way you live your life that it's a shock to your system, and it takes a bit of time to get used to. If it gets hard, that doesn't mean you can't get through it, it just means it's gonna take more effort than you expected it to.

Crack on and best of luck. Remember, your not a prisoner. Wink

no they bloody don't see that BBC proggie fighting the war? , there were many crewmen of the invincible who thought they'd never go to war , and joined up for the perks which I still remember from seeing the adverts around 2000 , which said get to travel the world , visit exotic climes ! , get your A levels paid for by the MOD etc.How naive , considering they are on a warship.

And that many people join up for lack of options just reading the original post implies this that he wants a decent civvie street job but can't get one , this has crossed my mind a few times too.

With the combined recruitment figures for all three arms of the armed forces, in every regiment, section, or trade, the figure is in the thousands each year.

Just as a foot note to the ship comment, not many Army regiments spend time at sea, so going home is just a case of getting in the car. Even if he did join the Navy, you only go to sea after training, not the day you join, so he'ld still have time to leave before it's too late.

Yes I know you ain't a prisoner , I remember a mate's son (rode a very broken SV which was the faired version but without the fairing if you get what I mean) he was in the navy , he packed it in after about 6 months he was stuck on a nuclear sub and didn't much like it, he had to sell him bike after that no navy pay = no money to pay the loan onthe bike hence jumping ship (even from a sub is possible).

though that said I remember another naval joke kind of , it said if you ever hear the phalanx firing its a signal to jump ship ASAP.
