PostPosted: 12:29 - 26 Apr 2006    Post subject: Tips to unwind Reply with quote

Hi

I'm getting very frustrated at the moment , my career is going backwards again and I'm, working a crap job yet again which in all honesty I'd probably be better off on the dole , but I don't want to claim the dole ever (still a Stigma of it in myeyes).

I seem to rant a helluva lot and riding extremely agressively to unwind because of my frustration and my patience has gone razor thin when normally I have the patience of a deity.

So what do you do to unwind and unleash some of your frustration? , my punch bag downstairs is already looking very very worn and I don't really want to burden my problems on friends I speak to.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hi Itchy,

You need to figure out what exactly is making you frustrated with work and why you feel you're moving backwards. Following on from this try and take some steps to change the problems with work (new job, talking to your boss, focusing your efforts on a new project etc.)

As far as getting your frustrations out the key is to do it in a way that will not hurt yourself or those around you. Ranting is fine, just make sure you've got a good listener and someone who will not judge you or try to 'solve' your problems fr you. Running is goos, as is going to the gym as this allows you to 'fatigue' physically whilst keeping focused mentally (and also helps process some of the days wo's)

You'll need to figure out what you need to do in order to get thigs moving forward in your job as, if you're just looking to vent, you'll just be 'fire-fighting' and not really getting anywhere.

Hope this helps.

I was going to suggest going for a ride but it seems you've tried that. Going for a ride or a run is the best thing for me to alleviate depression or general rage and frustration with the world. I do want a punchbag for precisely the same reason.

It helps to have something good to look forward to to focus on. At least it's a bank holiday this week eh. You should try to arrange something for it.

Have you thought about a combination of things, so have some kind of physical outlet - so maybe go for a run in the morning to boost your energy and make you feel energised.

Then when you get home try something more relaxing or spend some money and go for some Alexander Technique sessions. Alexander is all about ensuring that you are physically relaxed and 'balanced'. The idea of it is not just to relax you for the duration of the session (like a massage can) but to make you more aware of your posture and muscles to prevent stress permanently.

I suffer from tendonitis which is often brought on by stress/pressure as well as the obvious physical activities (playing tennis, too much violin practice Laughing as if I ever practice!). I have had Alexander technique, which is a form of manipulation a number of times when I have suffered quite badly from tendonitis and each time it has helped and improved my ability to use my arm for a much longer period - and also reduced my stress levels.

Clicky here

However, as a musician I am always going to be biased towards music therapy. Listening or playing music is an age old method of relaxation. Everyone has different tastes in music, but if you are broad minded or like classical music I would recommend something very organic like anything by Brahms.

I'm kinda going exactly the same scenario at the mo and I feel completely helpless with the current situation....And I have so many different things to sort out that even if I decide to look for a new job I wouldn't be able to take it for another six months Rolling Eyes cos I'm so skint.

lol, driving about in £150 banger is doing wonders for my self esteem too!

The exercise works, I'm out running most days and actually looking forward to it as its a good outlet but I'm finding its only temporary relief as it doesn't deal with the issues that is causing the fucking problem in the first place.

At present its making me feel unhappy, forgetful and really fucking aggro, which isn't particulary a nice combination.

Indulge in a bit of hand to gland combat Wink

But seriously, the frustration probably wont stop until you tackle the cause, no matter how much relaxation techniques you use. Think about what you want to change with regards to your career, and where you want to go from here. Write down some achievable goals, then take steps towards achieving them. You'll probably feel a lot better because you'll be taking positive steps towards changing your situation. Chin up Thumbs Up

Speaking to people is the only way I can get rid of such burdens, everything else is just masking it for a period of time.

Real friends won't look upon it as a burden.

I always find reading helps me more than anything else. But that depends on whether or not you enjoy reading. As soon as I am in a book I am completely oblivious to the world around me, this helps a lot!!

I also go for a walk if I need to calm down. Get some fresh air, have a bit of quiet. I do live in the country though and it may not work as well if you live in a busy area.

Lavender is great for calming and relaxing. Try some lavender scented bubble bath, candles, incense or even body lotion.

Also, try evaluating your situation. Rather than dwelling on the stress and frustration that you feel, cut it down into sections. E.g "I feel stressed because of ....... What can I do to change this?" And actually telling yourself that as hard as it is to control sometimes, getting wound up is not going to help the situation in any way, or make it go away, so what is the point? As soon as you feel the usual tension building, cut it off, take your mind away from it, and prevent it from working up into a big ball of stress.

If you have a hobby throw yourself into that. It may sound silly but sitting down with a blank piece of paper and just doodling anything you can think of, can really help aswell.

Hope this helps, and you feel better soon! Thumbs Up

Thought about taking up an agressive type of sport? I play squash three times a week and all you have to do is smash a ball as hard as you can against a wall Laughing

I also kiteboard on a regular basis but that isn't cheap. Cost you about a grand and a half UK money to get into.

Also buy a bag of shite motocross bike for 200 quid or something. You'll do less damage to yourself raggin the shit outta that then out on the road.

My personal favourite; Drums. Been playing for around five years and playing the kind of music i do (All out metal, lots of double bass and heavy hitting) is the best way to vent rage.
