There's a number of signs going up in various places to warn bike riders to take care.
Here's an example

Scunthorpe Telegraph wrote:
Eighty new signs are to be installed on the region's roads in a bid to reduce on the number of motorcycle crashes.

Signs with phrases such as 'Bends...dead? ahead' are to be placed at the side of some of the region's most dangerous roads. The North Lincolnshire Motorcycle Forum, in conjunction with the region's Road Safety Partnership, is putting up the high-visibility road safety signs over the next two weeks.

They will remind bikers and the drivers of other vehicles about the dangers for motorcyclists when out riding.

Only two to three per cent of road traffic on the region's roads is made up of motorcycles, but in North Lincolnshire two years ago, 50 per cent of people killed in road accidents were motorcyclists.

And although last year saw a 17 per cent reduction in the number of motorcyclists killed or injured on North Lincolnshire's roads, there were still 74 casualties, including two fatalities.

Since January 2006, there have been five road deaths - two of which were motorcyclists.

The new signs will be put up along the A161, the A1077 and the A18 - roads identified by the forum as popular motorcycle routes and locations where bike accidents had occurred.

Chairman of the partnership, Coun John England, said: "It is vitally important we tackle this problem. There are too many motorcyclists being killed or injured on our roads.

"I hope this sign initiative, together with the planned police enforcement and campaigns, will raise awareness among all drivers and make roads safer for motorcyclists.

"We don't want to discourage motorcycling in North Lincolnshire. We welcome safe riders to the area. We want them to enjoy riding.

"Most importantly, we want them to get home safely."

The campaign will run alongside police enforcement activity and other motorcycle road safety initiatives, including safety camera enforcement and the popular Bikesafe scheme.

Pc Roy Hindmarsh, also of the partnership, added: "The signs will also be installed on the North Bank and in Lincolnshire.

"They're already up in Derbyshire and the East Midlands, and that is where we noticed them.

"They are very popular, and have proved effective."

The signs will be installed later this month, and will be taken down at the end of the biking season in October.

For more details on the campaign, visit www.shinysideup.co.uk

Steve Hardwick, a member of the North Lincolnshire Motorcycling Forum, and a member of Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) and a long-time biker, said: "I am fully in support of this road safety campaign.

"I am sure these signs will be effective in raising awareness of the dangers facing motorcyclists on the roads.

"The fact the messages are aimed at drivers of other vehicles, as well as motor- cyclists, is good.

"Many of our problems are caused by other drivers. I think this initiative will improve safety for motor- cyclists."

However, some of the comments haven't been welcoming...

Having managed to get a day off over the Easter break, the first thing to hit me like a brick - while only 30 seconds from my home - was the new supposed safety signs which have been put up.

Being a biker myself, my first and only response to the 'Bends dead? ahead' sign was total and utter disgust. This type of sign, as well as the 'To die for' sign, is getting across only one message: If you own a bike, you will soon die on it.

Knowing a large number of bikers, the response of all those I have spoken to was the same.

In some cases it was 'Right, I'll give them to die for'.

Don't get me wrong. I am all for safety campaigns and making other road users aware of bikers, but someone or somebody is on the wrong wavelength.

The Think Bike campaign was a good idea which wasn't patronising, it gave a clear message to both bikers and other motorists.

A simple sign such as 'Bikers please be careful' would have had much greater effect, and be seen as being more sensitive and caring.

So has anyone here seen these?
What are your thoughts on these?
Is it taking the nanny state a bit far?, are they reasonable? should they be targetted at car drivers instead?

Any other thoughts and opinions wlecome Thumbs Up

I saw them in the Derbyshire Peaks last year and along Snake Pass - I can't see any harm in a gentle reminder to take it (relatively) easy on such popular biking roads. It's not like you have to pay any attention to them if you're that way inclined.

It's a good idea to have a simple warning sign such as 'dangerous bend ahead', maybe with a motorcycle symbol, that would make me slow down, I would appreciate the warning.

I don't like the 'dead....ahead' line and other clever bollocks. That's more like an advertising campaign than a warning sign.
There's no need for this. I would be half way round the bend and think ' Oh I get it' just before I hit the outside barrier.

Saw one of two of those on a road the other day. I took it as comfirmation that i had found an incredible road and promptly pinned the throttle open for the next 25 miles with a massive grin on my face and some badly worn knee sliders Laughing Thumbs Up

To me it looks like the beginning of a huge safety campaign that will make a mockery of biking, they’ve already taken the fun out of the riding in a lot of areas.
You don’t need to remind a biker he might die this time on the way to work, maybe the junctions that the councils can’t be fucked clearing up by cutting back bushes and trees should have warning signs. I think one of the main reasons for that classic cager “I didn’t see him issue” is due to road layouts.

Junctions can be a right nightmare at certain times of the day, for example, you’re going to work from Cheltenham town centre, using the road that gets you towards either Gloucester or Tewkesbury.
From my flat, travelling a distance no more than 4-5 miles there are around 30 sets of traffic lights, that’s 30 sets and literally feet apart, combine this with the random speed traps, the new signs being erected, at 7-8am in the morning the commute can be a complete free for all.

Come on, it's an A3 size piece of corrugated plastic tie-wrapped to an existing sign. I'll stick to worrying about the metal post, if that's ok Smile

This one is on lots of roads between Scunthorpe and Gainsbrough.

They had something similar up last year if I remember correctly, just not so many around.

They've been up in staffordshire, west mids and the derby peaks for the last few weeks.

"Think" ones are good idea but dead...ahead and to die for? I think there should be more aimed towards cage drivers personally.

Consider that done Laughing. Seen 2 outside Rempstone on the way to Nottingham on the A60. It's just a matter of not getting caught in the act. Difficult when u have a sign carried in your hand while riding a bike Laughing

There are some new signs up on the run from kingswinford to wolverhampton, can't find them on the net at the mo, but it seems to me that it's trying to say that as bikers we need to be aware, aware of what it doesn't state, I thought it would of been better inclined to drivers saying beware. bikers.
