bike lock opened with a pen

I´ve been reading articles like this one https://www.almax-security-chains.co.uk/pdfs/pen.pdf
and it´s sickening how easy the lock can be opened.
does anyone know anything about this??
is it just a normal pen or they do something to it like heating it or whatever to make it work??

I use the 'pen' method quite a lot to remove 'Kensington' locks from our IT equipment when an end user has lost the key. I wouldn't trust round locks on anything anymore, other than to act as a visual deterent which is fine for cheap IT kit, but not a bike.

Old news now, Had my Kryptonite lock replaced last year for free.
