Simply, are there any specific ways? My reaction times are in all fairness fairly poor, and riding a bike, I would like them to be quicker. Most of the time I'm okay because my startle reflex is ultra rapid, but now I've got more riding experience I'm less startled by things by things that happen on the road and consequently react a bit slower(sudden braking for red lights etc.)

I know playing sports and stuff will gradually decrease them, but are there any specific excercises you can do?

You can do it by training you muscles to move faster via exercise.

A reaction time is: Reflex time + Movement time

You can not do much about your reflex time, this is to do with the speed at which sensory components are interperated by your brain and a response is coordinated via neurones. No matter the person, our reflex times are very very similar in healthy person (i.e. ruling out disease).

Therefore, muscles training and observation exercises are the only sure way to get positive results.

The most simplest way is to play snap with cards, lol.

If it's to avoid accidents, best thing to do is to practice better observation.

Get some advanced training, or cheaper, get a copy of Motorcycle Roadcraft and try and practice some of the techniques - then hopefully you won't need the reaction times as much Smile.

Martial arts help i guess. If someone goes to slap me unexpectedly i tend to block straight away (can be embaressed when i bat a flirty girls arm away at a fair force).

If not, just practice better observation. You WILL get the 6th sense where you know what someones going to do before they do.

I agree with G If you can see things earlier you can prepare your reaction sooner.

I've found that any scary moments I've had on my bike like a wheelspin have been over before I'd had a chance to react and in most cases it's helped that I hadn't reacted by over steering, braking or easing off acceleration.
It's more important HOW you react to a situation rather than the fractions of a second of a reflex.
The best thing to do is practice emergency stops so when something unexpected happens (like a deer running out in front of you) you can rely on your reflexes and muscle memory to stop you as fast as possible.

the punching game , needs two people variation on hand slaps but much more pain ful and useful for self defence.

one stands right in front of you and throws a straight punch at your face , and you are to slap it out of the way , both sides get 25 punches each , start slowly as your speed improves in slapping the punches are not pulled ,

the person throwing punches can fake punches also

if you fail tol slap it out of the way you get a punch in the face.

I used to do this all the time with my dad when I was younger and could slap punches away easily after a few sessions

though we didn't do it that roughly we stood far enough apart so that there was a couple of inches between full reach and faces ,

Playing sports definitely helps. I read or saw somewhere that professional baseball players can predict where the ball is going to be when it reaches them so accurately, that it borders on precognition.

Yeah its not entirely to avoid accidents, I'm fairly observant, and most of the time I can pretty much see when someone may do something stupid, for example a pedestrians body language if they're about to cross the road etc.
I'd just like them to be a bit quicker in general really, punching game sounds...painful, think I'll stick to hand slaps, I was just wondering if there was anything other than the usual play sports etc. that could be done.

Ah, here you go, click below.. This is a good game to learn to use your startle reaction. I used to play this a lot and you'll be amazed at some of the times you can get when you tune in....

In all seriousness, any kind of game helps your brain develop better connections between bits of itself and you develop better reactions because of it. Game can include physical activity such as footie, playing on your XBox or games of 'peanuts' with your mates down the pub.

as I said if you are a rookie at this stand a couple inches from the max reach of the person you are practicing with , skiny blokes have much much longer reach.
