Seeing as sygate has been brought out by symnatec (funny that, nothing to do with shitting on their main free competition i'm sure)

Whats a good alternative?

Zone alarm i used to use but i dont like it much, too complex for its own good..

Any good free firewalls that just do when they are supposed to?

The windows firewall is perfect for simplicity, and you already have it installed! Just enable it in your network settings - it will stop the same incoming stuff that any other software firewall would, it's perfect for what you want.

People assume that windows firewall is rubbish because it comes with windows.

It's not rubbish by any stretch of the imagination. Enable it and do these facy "online firewall test" thingys, it comes back fine.
