Basically, I've got a slight tingling in my right hand, middle 3 fingers.

https://www.netdoctor.co.uk/ate/musclesjoints/203617.html

So it's carpal tunnel syndrome, I reckon. I'm wondering whether it's bike riding that's likely to have caused this? When I ride the bike, I often feel the need to 'shake out' my hand, to get rid of the numbness.

Any insights/ideas?

Cheers

You are more likely to have Vibration White Finger.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome usually affects the thumb and wrist rather than fingers IIRC?

go see a doctor , get a diagnosis then see another for a second or third opinion , and thank your lucky stars we live in the UK where the surgery is paid for already.

The other likely possibility is pressure in the wrist. The nerves to the fingers go through a small tunnel at the wrist to get into the hand - called the carpal tunnel. Pressure here will produce similar symptoms. Usually it is the middle fingers that are most affected. It can be worse at night and cause pain or discomfort that may wake you, or the hand may feel particularly numb and heavy first thing in the morning. This condition is called carpal tunnel syndrome.

There are usually no serious reasons for these symptoms. Nevertheless, it would be sensible to tell your doctor about them, so he or she can confirm the likely cause and advise you about treatment if that becomes necessary. This may be the case if the symptoms do not soon settle on their own.

I will be going to a doctor anyway, but wondered what people knew on here. Is there any form of treatment aside from surgery, as I don't want the condition to worsen. Confused

Go see your doc, I had a problem like this when I first started riding, half my hand went numb Shocked , was like it for about 6-8 weeks and gradually got better.

Things I did to improve this was adjust my riding position, lever position, clutch lever pressure, heavy bar weights (reduce vibes).

Also the type of bike you ride can have a large effect, sportsbike riders tend to suffer from this more with the increased load on their wrists.

I think if you actually had full blown CTS, it would be a lot worse than it is. Taking some of the steps mentioned above should help solve your problem.

Thumbs Up

P.S When you brake, try and use your legs on the tank to help support your body, rather than let your arms take the strain (it loads up your wrists).

I used to do a lot of brick face cleaning etc using high pressure H20 jets.

I also used to do a lot of heavy manual stuff with my hands and have had a few sharp hard knocks to my wrists and elbows.

I stopped doing it about 2 years ago and do as little as I can manually.

If I do anything heavy with my hands, I wake up with numb hands and pains in the joints of my wrist and elbows.

long journeys on the bike are made easier by loosening right off with the grips and just cupping the throttle, also sitting more upright and not putting weight on the wrists.

if it is carpel tunnel then your looking at either keyhole surgery to the wrists or open surgery. neither is proven 100% effective.

white finger is completely irreversible, although you can use massage techniques and essential oils to ease it a bit.

I just live with it.
