Cheap SV - or not

I've got the chance to buy a very cheap SV650 (i.e, a few hundred quid). Its a '99 V plate unfaired bike, good nick, decent mileage. It's not on the register or damaged. The problem with it is that it keeps blowing the ignition fuse. I'm not worried about that as it should be a fairly easy fix, and even if not then I'd have a lot of money to throw at it before it became an expensive bike.

The thing is, I don't really think I want one. But, it will be very cheap biking for a while and then I can sell on for a profit when I'm done with it (unless I spend £1k + fixing it or bin it).

So - do I get it and just make do, or do I go for a more expensive bike that I actually want?

If you're sure you wont make a loss on the SV would it be worth doing both?

Option one: get SV, fix it, sell it at a profit and then buy preferred bike

Option two: Buy both at the same time, fix SV and use as a hack or, if finances get tough, sell and make a profit.

Both seems winners to me and yo get to have your preferred bike in both!

I can't afford to buy both at the same time (and 2 bikes isn't an option at the mo anyway). If I did get the SV I wouldn't be able to sell it straight away as that would be looked down on quite severly.

seems cheap, if you can live with it eating fuses til you get round to fixing it... bit of an untold element though as to what is causing it.

Do you really have to ask for advice? It's like saying i just got asked to star in a porn movie, should i do it?!!

If someone is dumb enough to sell a bike for peanuts over a blown fuse take advantage.

I'd go for it with the intention to sell in a while (though there's some good value SVs around right now).

SV really isn't my sort of bike, but /some/ fun can still be had.

If you don't, I might be interested if the offer's good for others .

Downgear it.

Put billet calipers on it.

Have a cheap stunt machine.

Hi,

To go against the grain I would not buy a bike it did not want, as you say you will be stuck with it for a fair bit of the summer at least and you will hate it every day (well I did with the clio).

It should be cheap and easy to fix but it should be easy to bleed the brakes on a ZZR.

So assuming you have ridden a SV even if not this one if you dont like it wait. If you are justa bit well x would be better then maybe.

But if you buy the bike you like and it does not run right and cost more money you will be wishing for the SV

The older type SVs are quite desireable - with an aftermarket exhaust they sound almost like a ducati.
Newer ones are harder to fiddle with!
- and some don't care for the more angular styling.

I bought a Buell XB9R for a song, just to have something to trade in on the MT-01. Allowed me to have my deposit for the MT already on a credit-card, if you know what I mean.

Made a few hundred quid on it + got 6 months riding on it. Was sorry to see it go in the end though

Depends how short a time you can keep it without being frowned upon.

A brand new wiring loom is probably not that expensive if it came down to it, so fixing it should be cheap enough.

But if it is not the bike you want then there is a good chance you won't enjoy it. Trying to be sensible can really suck.

Or buy it and sell the lot on ebay for more than you'd get for the bike in one piece in the first place

First thing I'd ask is have you taken it out for a good thrash? Would be the easy way to decide whether you could live with it for a while.

If it was me i'd just bypass the fuse (if i thought it wouldent fry the bike). Only thing is electrical fires can be nasty
