After a quick bit of advice!
I'm about to order a new desktop from Dell for home use - internet, bit of word processing etc, viewing digital photos etc, not really used for gaming or anything so it doesn't need to be that brilliant spec - wise.
Now, I can get a system for £299, Celeron 325 / 512 RAM, 80 HD, flat panel etc. If I want a P4 processor it'll be £100 more. My question then is, is it worth the extra or will the Celeron be OK for me?

If your not really doing anything processor intensive, like Photoshop/ripping DVD's etc a Celeron will probably be OK.

Damn - too late.

I personally hate Celeron but it's all down to personal preference. I think they're shocking - other people love them.
They're certainly better now than they used to be.

I agree, they are a shit processor, but for what they're designed for there OK. If you KNOW you wont be playing games or editing videos/photoshopping then they'll be fine. My stepmum used to have a celeron in her PC and only ever browsed the 'net, sent emails etc. and for that it was perfect.

We've got a couple of celeron based laptops at work that are only used for a VPN and Terminal Service connection to one of our servers and the celeron is a nightmare for it. Very slow. Boot takes about 4 weeks and software takes a month and a half to open.
Like I said though - some people love them. Would definitely steer clear of it for gaming.

Get a P4, a decent 2.8Ghz is only about £90 now anyway.

Celerons are shite, might as well get and athlon XP it will run faster.

For day to day internet/email/word processing etc a Celeron processor has always been ok.

If you don't like it, I do happen to have a 2.8GHz P4 here that you can have for £50 delivered.

Celerons should be kept confined to the rubbish bin.

Celerons are OK for what they are, and can do menial tasks.
Just don't expect to do processor intensive tasks or play recent game on it in good quality.

Some Celerons are good overclockers too, I remember having my Tualatin based 1.2GHz Celeron running at 1.5GHz a few years ago and that was rather stable.

They do what they are designed to do very well. It's not a high performance processor, so what's the problem?
