Is it legal to ride a trackbike on the road?

The bike would be showing a number plate and have a horn but no lights or indicators and will be insured.

I would stick a rear light on. There's arguments over whether on it is required for legality, but it's worth doing anyway so that you don't get a truck stuck up your arse.

The rest is a rather grey area, but basically, yes.

Just did a search on https://www.motuk.com.

They say "If the bike was manufactured with indicators you will fail the test."

As for lights, I really hope you only mean headlight?

You will need a brake lights and reflector to be legal in that department.

Not sure on headlights.

I rode a ZX7R around with no lights, indicators, mirrors or speedo. It did have a horn though. It got through a daytime MOT ok too.

Depends how many track days you do a year..Might work out cheaper to buy a trailer.

You definitely want a brake light.

People expect to see it on the road and I think you're asking for trouble being without one. How do you usually notice a car has non-working brake lights? You almost stove yourself through their rear windscreen, especially if they've pulled up hard. Laughing

Don't credit other road users with the ability to look at the big picture and see you're slowing down, they're only gonna be looking at your wee red light until they've realised they're gaining on you rather more quickly than expected. Which might be a bit late.

Also what G says about insurance... I got hit up the rear at traffic lights years ago, I was stationary and a woman bumped me at maybe 5mph or less. My bike was fine but she knackered her bumper and dented her bonnet. Even something that minor could get spun around to blame you if there's no brake light, and would cost a good few hundred to fix.

Depending where and how much I was riding it, I'd be tempted by indicators.

Just because I get annoyed by other vehicles that don't indicate, it's another of those slightly subliminal things that other drivers notice. I had really hard to see flush mounts on my old cb, and I could kinda see drivers going 'where's she going' if I was sat waiting to turn right. Of course, I'm talking about hacking around central London every day, if I was just riding it for fun here and there it wouldn't be such a biggie.

It'd be very easy to create a plate/brake light/indicators all on one hanger that would be a doddle to take on and off, then at least you'd have some rears. How about the ones built into the mirrors for the front? Then they come off along with the mirrors for track use and get slapped back on for the road.

Guess I just don't see the sense in raising the odds on getting taken out for the sake of 10 mins plugging and screwing every trackday. Karma

I have just been to my MOT testers to see about a daytime MOT for my ZX7R trackbike! All I need is a horn and a Speedo, however the speedo doesnt need to work!

If you have holes in the fairing for lights, you need lights! Thumbs Up
