Not wishing to question your riding style, but are you in the right gear at all times? Have you tried being in a lower gear and keeping the revs up when accelerating hard? Just a thought.

The question is a good one actually Chris. I've only had the bike 2 weeks and only been on it 4 times due to weather.

Before this bike I had a Triumph Sprint 955i which, as you probably know, is a triple and needs to be ridden accordingly.

On the GSXR I do think I'm probably changing up a little early and laboring the engine.

The rattle is there in first gear as well though. In first when you get to about 2k revs you can here it. If you open it up in 1st it gets louder. As soon as you ease off it disappears.

Did DAS 4 months later then bought RF600 Loved it, sold it bought Bandit 1200(K3). EFFIN lOVED IT. Wanted something a bit more sporty so got Triumph Sprint ST 955i (53). Not sporty enough so now on my GSXR 1000 K3 and absolutely love it. 1 year down the line, nearly died way too many times on this bike. Sold it. Had a 6 month break. Missed biking so now, Aug 2019 have a 1999 ZX9r. What a beauty she is too.

You need to discount any other factors first like loose or rattly metal parts/trim etc. Make sure everything is good and tight.

When the engine is under load, even if it is being revved freely in neutral, you can hear that noise? If so and you are certain it's coming from the engine area that is not good news m8. If the noise is there throughout the rev range (eg above 2500 rpm) when driving in the correct gear for the speed and you can hear it, when riding along, in all gears, deffo not good. Being the bike it is, I suspect the engine has hard a hard life, maybe that's why the last owner got shut.

Keep investigating, it may yet be a straightforward or fairly cheap fix, otherwise get it into a different workshop for a detailed assessment, ideally in the next town. These dealers are all in it together m8.

So, is it engine related, ie in time with engine revs, or transmission related, ie tempo increases with speed, more tempo and rising tempo in second gear compared with first gear.

Engine speed related, or bike speed related ?

How is the noise on the overrun ? ie throttle closed and slowing down with no brakes ?

No noise in Neutral Chris. Only when in gear a under load.

On over run the noise goes away completely no mater what gear or speed.

I'm trying to think if its engine or speed related. I'd probably lean towards engine related tbh because, the increments on the ticking doesn't really get any faster throughout the gears.

If it doesn't affect the performance of the bike I would leave it for a wee while and see how things develop. If the noise gets louder then you will deffo need a technical apparaisal. I do think it's engine related, either camchain/adjuster or top end is on its way out. Not sure if yours has a primary chain (engine to gearbox) as they can be hellish clattery on a lot of machines. Mine rattles and slaps about on the overun but it doesn't bother me. Just make sure there are no loose bits or trim or engine part rattling. Take the bike out one mild day and give it a good run, not necessarily thrashing it, just ride it. Check it over on return. Tell the missus where you're going and how long - just in case!

Picked the bike up Saturday. I asked the sales guy if I could speak to the mechanic that worked on my bike and he had no issue with that. The bike was still with the mechanic along with a load of other bikes awaiting collection.

The mechanic said it's a Suzuki thing and that they all do it. He pointed out a K4 he had there and said "You want to here that one, it's twice a loud as yours"

He seemed convincing but I suppose it's their job to be convincing.

I'm trying to get a good recording of the noise now by placing an extension mic from my Drift camera to somewhere on the bike where the noise can be heard. I'll then take it to a mechanic I know and trust.

If it is normal then maybe someone on here with a GSXR 1000 has the same noise?

I really want to believe it's normal then I can move on and enjoy the bike without worrying I'm slowly destroying the engine.

Cheers all

Gaz
