Anyone that thinks the NHS should have been the sole benefactor of the the monies not paid to the EU is just a thick cunt. |

As it turns out, the 350 million wasn't real and having it written on the side of a bus and shown on television repeatedly during the referendum campaign was never intended to influence voters. Anybody with the temerity to suggest that it was anything more than coincidence that the bus kept on turning up as BoJo and co. made speeches is an idiot...
Also, anybody who made the association between the fictitious 350 million and additional funding for the NHS was an idiot also, because it was mere coincidence that funding for the NHS and nothing else was mentioned on the side of the bus. Only an idiot would think that was the message... ____________________ Now - Speed Triple, old ratty GS550, GSXR750M

The lies came in thick and fast from both sides but IIRC the Brexit side played more of an upbeat "think of the things we could achieve with the freedom" tune whereas Remain kept banging on about the sky falling in. I still say the use of treasury funds and government resources to put a leaflet through the door of every voting adult in the UK explaining why we should remain in the EU only days before the campaign funding rules kicked in renders all complaints about what the pro Brexit campaign may or may not have said and done null and void. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. The debate is done with, but the fact that the current PM and his stooges lied so blatantly to the electorate and half of that electorate doesn't care still worries me. It makes me think that people are happy to believe anything if said in a convincing-enough way.
The impact of Dr Goebbels on modern politics cannot be stated enough... ____________________ Now - Speed Triple, old ratty GS550, GSXR750M

With the benefit of hindsight I think 'project fear' was an educated guess and we still don't know how it will play out in the medium/long term. I really hope that all said was wrong but I do know that my supermarket bill has gone up by 20% already.
Whereas, Boris's bus was a blatant lie perpetrated by a bloke whom we now trust with our economy, health and security.
Its water under the bridge now though and we have no choice but bend over and take what comes... ____________________ Now - Speed Triple, old ratty GS550, GSXR750M

I wonder if we should open some specialist clinics to help those severely affected by the trauma of Brexit? ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

martin734 wrote: | The simple fact is that both campaigns were all about half-truths and careful political statements. The leave campaign was all about what we could gain from becoming independent from the EU while never actually promising anything and completely ignoring the reality of just how dependent were were on the EU and how dependent on it's goodwill we would be when we left.
The remain campaign was all about how much damage leaving the EU would cause to the country, emphasising and exaggerating just how much we needed to be part of it and how much stronger we are with being a member, without mentioning any of the costs and disadvantages of being a member.
The simple truth is that politicians from both sides of the campaign didn't really have much of a clue what was going to happen after Brexit, for the simple reason that much of what would happen post-Brexit was in the hands of the EU and not the UK.
Personally I voted to remain as I genuinely believe that the UK generally benefitted more from being part of the EU than it was disadvantaged. So far things seem to be fairly even, I think we have gained pretty much as much as we have lost. I think how well we do in the future depends on what sort of trading relationship we can develop with the rest of the world. If we behave the same sort of arrogance that we have in the past and try to get everything our own way, then we will find the future very difficult. If we accept that we are a fairly average sized fish in a very large pond full of very big sharks and manage our expectations and demands, we could do very well outside the EU. |
