There was someone else wanting this.

Basically, we could just do with you reassuring people that the 1400 or whatever it was that funds the trip was coming out of your pocket, so whatever was donated actually went to charity, and didn't pay for your holiday.

I'll be using an '03 Aprilia Tuono and personally I'll be doing over 2000 miles.

I know that doesn't sound much to most bikers but it's for a VERY worthy cause and the places we'll be visiting are significant to Barry Sheene. I'll be forking out £500+ of my own money so folk can't say " So, we're paying for your holiday!?" Rolling Eyes

I can't do a Bob Geldof and make people feel guilty but it doesn't take much to sacrifice a couple of beers worth of money to help children and their families get through the treatment of cancer and leukemia. Does it? Wink

To make it more challenging and to get more sponsors, have you considered taking pillion a family of dwarfs who have cancer? Being taken on a trip like that would definitely help them get through the treatment of cancer and leukemia, it'd be brilliant!! I know I'd sponsor someone doing that. Very Happy

At the moment it sounds like you want people to donate £2650, which is the minimum sponsorship total, so that you can go on what sounds like quite a good holiday? But there must be more to than that cos that isn't charity, that's getting people to pay so you can go on holiday? Confused

If this is the same as the other woman, hold on, I'll dig the thread up later, I swear like 1400-1600 of the sponsorship money goes towards the trip and not to the charity.

Forgive me if it's a different trip, I'll dig up the other one in a sec.

I'm not sure what the challenge is here...

If you're not covering the full cost of the trip then it is a subsidised holiday.

If people want to give to a particular charity then I can't see:

a) why a 2 week jaunt across Europe is so inspiring that it would motivate people to give any more. Though you may be able to rope some friends in who wouldn't otherwise donate just because you're involved and they feel obliged.

b) why anyone who donates would want a proportion of their money going to fund a trip when it could all go towards the charity.

No-one is paying for my holiday! I just wanted to raise money for CLIC-Sargent while doing something that I was going to do anyway. Currently, I'm flogging loads of my own stuff on ebay to help fund it.

I'm not going to beat about the bush here. More than £1400 goes to CLIC-Sargent and the rest pays for Medical Support, accomodation and evening meals. I'll have to pay for fuel and lunch myself, every day.

The minimum is £2650 but obviously I'd like to raise as much as I can. I'll be approaching bike-related businesses like Hein Gericke for sponsorship, in exchange for advertising space on my bike. I'll also be making local radio stations and newspapers aware of my fundraising.

I'm not just sitting back and waiting for the donations to come flooding in, if that's what you're thinking!? Shocked

I think the thing is, is that you should really be paying for the accomodation and evening meals yourself, rather than using the donations that were for 'charity', as part of your comfort.

Does defeat the point a little.

Why not donate the whole £2650 to charity rather than half of it being used to pay "Classic Tours"?

If you're going to do the trip anyway then the costs to yourself will remain the same (fuel, bike consumables, hotels, etc etc) but by not participating in the "Barry Sheene Memorial Motorcycle Challenge 2010" you could double your charity contribution. Smile

That would be the way to make the biggest difference to children with cancer and leukemia, wouldn't it?

I could arrange that trip for significantly less than £1400, and a lot less still when you're looking at bulk bookings - I suspect Classic Tours is making a very tidy profit from charity.
