Lo, Smile

I'm looking into a particular gixxer 750, a year 2000 model. What should one look out for, when it comes to mechanical problems? Bike is 15k miles, FI, new spark plugs, air filter, aesthetically looks mint. Very Happy

Thanks

Hey,

Keep a look out for the standard things, no cracks in the frame/swingarm/subframe/rims. Not too much pitting in the forks and that the stanchions or the entire fork is not bent. Make sure the engine number matches the V5 and that the V5 is genuine and matches the address of where you are etc.

Scratches in paintwork, make sure if it has any stickers on it that they aren't hiding a dent as that's the main reason people put them on in the first place..

When you get there, say hello, shake hands or whatever and then PUT YOUR HANDS ON THE ENGINE AND EXHAUST. If it's hot just walk away as you cannot get a true representation of how it starts from cold. If you want to try it again tell him you'll come again tomorrow and you want it to be stone cold upon arrival.

If you take a look here, it's a very comprehensive guide of things to look out for and what to do when viewing a motorcycle.

As for things specific to an SRAD, a lot of them get tracked so look for things odd/out of place. Such as:

Lots of tyre changing marks on the rims.
Make sure the mileage matches the logbooks as it could have had the speedo changed at some point if it has been tracked.
Check that the brakes don't bind and that the discs aren't warped, you feel that as pulsing in the brake lever if it's pretty bad as you brake.

Hope that helps! Thumbs Up!

If that's the gsxr750y then I own that model.

Mines on 30,000 miles. Engine has had a rattle for a while but I got it looked over today... He said it's got a slightly loose header pipe. Sorted that.

Check rear suspension... It's quite low and picks up loads of crap. The gearbox on mine is pretty smooth... But I've heard some get clunky if hammered.

It's FI but has manual choke and idle screw... Check these work.
Check condition of forks... Leaks will cost you a bit unless you can DIY.

Pretty shit on fuel if you ride sensible... If you don't...it plummets even more Laughing

It does come with a tailcone piece, could've been a track bike. Thinking It is indeed a gsx-r 750y (2k model), and ##Paddy## shit on the fuel, shit for a sportbike, or average? Should I go for an R1 instead then. Laughing

Appreciated, both Paulington & ##Paddy##.

Check the state of the front subframe, most specifically the metal bracket that goes between the forks and yokes from the front of the frame to the clocks. That frame seems to be the first thing to get smashed up in a crash and the last thing to get replaced afterwards Smile

##Paddy##,

what is the first thing to succumb to rust? I know the full exhaust system is stainless steel, how's the build quality: bolts, steering mechanism components, bearings?

I'm getting sick of rusty Hondas. Laughing

Thanks Smile

I will go look at mine.. It hasnt got any rust I can see Shocked

Fuel.. well, I can only speak of my experience.. it may need a service. I put £10 in when the petrol light came on, used it to travel about 50 miles and it went back to orange.

Ive managed to get £20 to do 80 miles... but that is seeing how fast it can go Laughing

This week, im running low on money.. im going to try and get as much as I can out of the £20, riding like a nan Laughing

I'll leave you with some sexy pics though.. its been down the road/track at some point Laughing Bear that in mind Wink

Hot damn, looks squeaky-clean for a 11 year old bike. Very Happy I'll return the favour, if and when I settle the deal.

Thanks once again.

Hah, I saw the dent, was talking about the frame/subframe & misc metal parts - look clean, rear brake caliper might need some scrubbing, though. Razz

Ou-la-la. Embarassed There was no RH spoiler on at that time due to *fap, fap, fap* work on the bike. Smile Love it, turned out to be 25k miles, never crashed, though, some scratches on the right side due to a devil-of-a-kid dropping it in the presence of his father (previous owner). Crying or Very sad

I'm going to tap this bitch with GPS alarm and Adamantium locks. Twisted Evil

That butchered front fairing suggests that it's been down the road.. sufficient enough to bend the H frame which is why it's absent. Either that, or the previous owner took off his clipons to fit renthal straight bars because I've seen many a bike with retrofitted straight bars which needed their front fairing chopped like that... Makes it look ugly IMO and spoils the lines.

Did you notice that when you bought the bike? Every seller would always say that their bike "hasn't been down the road" or "never seen rain"... to provoke a sale. And the engine sounding rough doesn't bode well.

Indeed. Looked good until I spotted the butchered top fairing and the stupid little mirrors that someone's fitted.

Yes, that's not a glass screen, I have to get one of those DoubleBubble ones. Smile That really is the sound of the can, some no-name, million millimetres in diametre slip-on. That one will also have to go in favour of something more balanced. Laughing

I'm glad you're happy with your purchase so I'm in no position to slag it off or pick holes in it.

But you're missing the point I made about your butchered front fairing.

Compare your side profile with the one below.

https://www.icenimotorcycles.co.uk/images/Project%20pictures/GSXR%20600/after.JPG

Have a look at your nose cone and then have a look at the one on your bike. I see 3 things

Arrow The most obvious is that the fairing does not extend all the way up - it's been hacksawed hence why he's put tape or trip over the fairing edge and cheapo mirrors.

Arrow There's no H-Frame/fairing support. The ONLY reason why not to have this is if it's snapped in a major crash and been bent. He clearly didn't want to replace it so decided to butcher the fairing instead.

Arrow You definitely WILL not be able to put a double bubble screen on it because you'll run out of fairing- the screen WILL not stay secure with the top two bolts missing - ride at any sort of speed and it will start to flap. Put a standard screen on it (double bubble if you must) and you may find that the fairing doesn't have the full coverage.

I think it's a case of a seller knowing they've got an enthusiastic buyer and telling half-truths or just blatant lies. Did you have anybody "experienced" with you to check the bike over, because anybody would have spotted that a mile away.

25,000 miles... maybe a substantial amount on track given the calibre of the bike. Just don't want you to find out in 2 months time that the bike was a lemon. I think he's described it as mutton dressed as lamb.

Given the top brace is gone, I'd suggest you check over the headlight and clock bracket I mentioned before rather closely, if it's mint then it might have been a moment of madness from someone trying to make the bike look more modern, if it's patched up then it's almost certainly the result of a crash.

Personally I wouldn't panic too much frankly, they are far from fragile bikes, just ask Mattspratt about the ordeals his 600 survived Laughing
