Just wondering how many points does it take to loose your licence. I was talking to some one the other day who has 6 points on their provisional licence and i was pretty sure 6 points mean you loose it on a provisional. Also how many points is it on a full licence. Thanks for any information.

I think that once you get to twelve, then you can wave bye bye to the pink plastic in your wallet. Wink

On your full license its 12 points. However if you have held it less than 2 years its 6 points.

Not sure on a provisional.

Your allowed 12 points on a provisional.

After you pass your test if you get points that take you upto or over 6 within 2 years they revoke your licence.

12 points on a full licence before they ban you.

What happens if you have passed your car test 2 years ago then pass your motorcycle test now? Do you have to go through the 6 points in 2 years thing all over again?

And you have to take an extra long re-test after your ban.
Just go careful in the first 2 years, theres really no excuse to get 6 points in the first 2 years if you drive safely.

Yeah, but only for the part that counts. So if you've had your car license for three years and then get your bike part, you have two years to behave yourself or you lose the bike part and have to do it again.

That's what I was concerned about after passing my DAS, as if I get points through the car, it counts against the bike test, so I'd have to do it all again. Rolling Eyes

It ain't. Its 2 years from getting a full licence regardless of what licence. So if you had a full car licence for 2 years then passed your bike test the 2 years wouldn't start again.

Not for collecting 12 points you don't.

Not what I was told by the guys at the DSA when I passed my theory test Priller. I can lose my bike entitlement from my licence if I get 6 points or more over the next two years. Whether its from my car or from my bike.

The moral is, be fookin careful for two years!

And I think you'll find now that every person that gets a ban has to re-sit a practical test before they get their licence back.

Had this a while ago on vd so I emailed the DVLA, cant find the email now though.

News to me, 'Crash it for fun' was banned and just got his licence back without doing a test.

I think its 3 years before they come off but you need to tell the insurance company upto 4 or 5 years back.

Hi
Dosnt your licence get taken away if you get so many points withing a certain time. I think it might be 9 in 6 months (no matter how long you've had your licence). I might be wrong though?

A bloke where I work reckons he has 15 points in his licence and that he got a special dispensation as he has to travel 50 miles a day and uses the car for his disabled kid.

It's 4 years before the points come off your license. Sod telling the insurance company after 5 years. As far as I'm concerned, if the points aren't on my license, the insurance company doesn't need to know.

I have 7 points at the moment, all for not having insurance back in 2000. They came down on me pretty hard which wasn't very fair as I actually did have insurance but the broker was messing me about (it was some time after I had cancelled the insurance that I got summonsed).

Another thing, you can plead with the courts to let you keep your license (as Mattastic said) if you have a good enough reason.

Just ride carefully (maybe fast, but be wary Razz ) and you won't have any problems. Thumbs Up Smile

I got 3 points + £60 fixed penalty by a mobile camera unit, it was a foggy day, and they were sitting tucked in a corner of the flyover as I passed underneath it....c%#@*!!!

Was in a car, was doing 81mph...which was actually very lucky because I think that was about the slowest I was going on the motorway that day Laughing Shifty

Once you are on 11 points you then become what is called a "Totter" and any further endorsable offences leave you liable for disqualification under the totting up procedure.

Likewise if you are on 9 points, you will not be offered a fixed penalty for speeding as the standard 3 points would also make you a totter so it would have to be a Court appearance.

However, even though you may have sufficient points to have you banned, it is entirely at the discretion of the magistrates, so if you can show good reason why you shouldn't lose your licence, in theory you could end up riding with a licence showing 15+ points on it.

An extended re-test is only required if ordered by the court, this is normally applied when someone is convicted of a major driving offence such as death by dangerous driving, dangerous or careless driving, racing on the highway or similar offences.

Magistrates have discretion on most things, for example I went to court with a friend of mine a couple of weeks ago for doing 110 on the Motorway. I gave evidence as a character witness and not only did he keep his licence, but he only got 4 points and £125 fine. The guy before him was done for 104 and was fined £300 and got a 6 month ban, both were on clean licences. At the end of the day, if the Magistrates want to make life awkward regardless of whether you have a clean licence or not, they can do just that.

They can certainly provide a good indication of likely penalties for that particular court area!

1.2g really isn't that much TBH, you would only feel 20kg heavier assuming you weigh 100kg. I would have thought that it pull more g's than that.

Have fun though TC, should be an interesting trip. Thumbs Up
