I was browsing another forum where most of its members are american when I came across an accident thread that someone witnessed, just thought I would show people what happens when you don't wear leathers.

There was a very bad motorcycle wreck last week in Deer Park on X Street. My mother witnessed the accident and said that two bikes, both Hayabusa's, passed her while she was out for her morning walk going about 120 mph. (clearly she is a fast walker Razz )

A car turned in front of one of the bikes and the bike struck the rear quarter panel of the car and the rider flew about 50 yards after impact. The rider is in the hospital in pretty bad shape after being taken by Lifeflight. Unfortunately he has no medical insurance. The other rider was arrested and charged with racing and both guys were issued a fine of $5,000. Warning: Some of the pictures are very graphic.

It really is an act of stupidity when you go out in shorts, but to go out like that then race down a street at 120mph is just ridiculous, how he isn't dead I have no idea!

Isn't it much safer to wear your "gear" all the time though, you can't control when an accident will happen but if your not wearing a helmet the smallest accident could kill you!

In my opinion its a bit stupid that you should even consider riding around without a helmet!

i didnt suggest all americans were idiots, riding with your gear is your choice, doesnt bother me

if it was a pic of a guy from the UK who was splattered all over the road, then i would say "british idiot" they all annoy me, and they all want people to feel sorry for them, well im sorry but no, they dont deserve it

A true statement and you are correct about your opinion, but a Man Has to know His Limitiations Very Happy and whan I say slow I mean about 20 MPH just to feel the wind in my face. Thumbs Up Back in the mid 1960's when I was riding my first Honda No One wore Helmets back then as it was so uncool and looking back so stupid.

I was a little Thin Skined about the American idiot remark as the member did say he would have said he was a idiot from where ever he was from. Thumbs Up Very Happy

Your right it is fun!! You look like a right tw*t. Laughing

I had a mate who had the same attitude as you have now. Thinking you won't be bothered if you come off and get a bit of rash etc. He crashed in the end, and died three times on the way to the hospital. He spent the whole of december and most of january in intensive care, tubes coming from every part of his body, pins in his right arm and right leg. He ruptured near enough everything inside of his body, and they didn't know how he pulled through. Anyway, as I said, he had the same attitude that he wouldn't be bothered and he spent every night after he had woke up in agony and would be rolling around the bed crying. It took about 6 months for most of the gravel rash he had to heal up and he lost most of the use of his hand for a couple of months. So just think about that, and if you reckon you could take that sort of pain when you come of one day in your matcho man shorts and sandals.

isnt it funny how attitudes and opinions change over the years!

I was exactly the same with the 'leather all the time' frame of mind up until a couple years ago...now I do wear jeans on occasion, especially if its so damn hot I cant get my leather jeans on!!!

And I will continue to do so because its my choice. Luckily we dont live in a nanny state currently, so I do make my own choices. But then you lot already know my opinion on this...funny how the same ole cr@p rears its head time and time and time again on this forum.
Boring.

Blimey, that's grim. The pic of the guy's back where most of his skin's come off. F*cking hell! Show's the importance of a helmet though as just imagine what his head would have been like if that did'nt take the impact for it.

Leathers should be made a legal requirement. Not so much for the twats who decide to ride without them, but more so for the poor paramedics, nurses, doctors, family and friends etc who have to pick up the pieces when you do fall off.

I'm not going to say too much really as I have been known to ride in jeans (with my bike boots, gloves, helmet, jacket etc) so I'm guilty of it really but riding around almost naked is just pure selfishly stupid. But now after realising how dangerous it is, I've bought myself some proper textile bike trousers that I wear over my jeans.. won't protect me as much as leathers but are much much better and it's only really for short distance stuff/commuting - anything more and I wear leathers.

It may be your choice to ride without leathers, but the doctors and nurses that need to clean you up when you crash don't have a choice at all!

Oh yes they do.

Why specialise as an A&E doctor (because there ARE consultancies in Trauma, Emergency, etc etc) if you aren't interested in the realities of life which can be extremely unpleasant. They might well tut at people riding bikes without incorrect gear.

But they also tut at people driving without seatbelts, without their children in proper restraints, or, equally, half-naked and receiving a blow job whilst they drive.

I never ride in shorts, but after mowing the yard I will take a ride around the block in jeans and a long sleeve shirt (don't like the sun burn here in Texas) but sometimes I will not wear the helmet as I posted before, 20 MPH is really slow as I have people on bicycles pass me when I do the cool off ride Shocked Shocked My neighborhood has new streets so no pot holes to dodge and I watch out for cars backing out of the driveways. my wife use to work in the E.R. so I know the risk I am taking (very small, going really SLOW)

I am looking for ZR rated tires for my old 1986 FJ1200 Yamaha it has 120/8016 inch front and 150/8016 rear I have some worn Michelin Macadam 100's that they are not making anymore and I want a zr rated radial, anyone know of a good place to try??

Thanks Thumbs Up

And you would deny people having fun and having a right to choose?

What if someone withdrew your choice to ride a motorbike at all?
Say the Really Major Safety Geeks came along and said "Oh, the riding of motorcycles is SO DANGEROUS that we're going to ban it entirely, and force them all to watch the burning of all the bikes on a bonfire of huge proportions."

You wouldn't like that. Having your personal choice removed.

No, I am not DENYING anyone their right to scrape their skin off...not at all.....
they can have their 'fun'....by all means...GO for it....
they all deserve the 'fun'

We all have a right to choose, of course we do....and we all must live with the consequences of such.

Not necessarily, that helmet, from the picture, is heavily scuffed, he may have lost some skin but coming off your bike at any speed doesn't create a heavy head impact. It does if you hit it on something else but not the road, your maximum vertical displacement is about 2m, this is the greatest height you will hit the ground from and it would be VERY unusual to hit head first. There is a fair chance at that sort of speed that the helmet put him at a greater risk of a severe cervical spinal injury due to the increased mass of his head due to wearing the lid.

Quote:
7. As a result of (5) and (6), we establish that a tradeoff between head and neck injuries confronts a potential helmet user. Past a critical impact speed to the helmet (13 mph), which is likely to occur in real life accident situations helmet use reduces the severity of head injuries at the expense of increasing the severity of neck injuries.
The Effect of Motorcycle Helmet Use on the Probability of Fatality and the Severity of Head And Neck Injuries; Jonathan P. Goldstein, Ph.D. synopsis of study[/url]

Shocking pics, a serious reminder to wear the proper gear.

I think what shocks me more than anything, is parents who take their kids on the back without the proper gear.

I saw a guy the other day in full leathers on a Bandit 1200, with a small child, guess around 10 - 12 years old in jeans with a sleavless T shirt on! I mean how irrisposible is that of the adult rider!!!!

I remember years ago, I took the neighbours young lad out on my Daytona, he loves bikes, asked his Mum and she said ok. He was 15 years of age then. I had a quiet word with his mum and insisted he was wearing proper gear, which he had from riding on the back of other peoples bikes. I also explained that there is a risk on bikes and if she was 100% sure.

Thinking back, I wonder how nice she would have been if something had happened.

Anyway, I digress, the point is, with a youngster on the back I feel it is the adult riders job to say you must wear the proper gear before you get on my bike! Just like the driver can be fined if the rear passenger is, under 14??? and does not wear his seatbelt.

Psst Shaun, I thought you only wore jacket and jeans to work Razz What happens if you crash when your not wearing leathers Surprised

I admittedly don't wear protective gear all the time I am on my bike but if I am going any distance I try and wear leathers but mainly so I have knee sliders and not really for the protection side of things.
