PostPosted: 12:32 - 23 Aug 2004    Post subject: Girl racers Reply with quote

I'm putting together an all girl race team and plan to take the racing world by storm by having between 25 and 50 new girls starting with Team Bikegirl for 2005.

Plan 2005: Club racing rookies (Bemsee)
Plan 2006: Club racing yr 2 + rookies
Plan 2007: British Championship - 125/R6/Superstock + club racing + club rookies

I may run a team in British 125s and Superstock in 2005 dependant on sponsorship and interest.

Therefore.... I'm looking for these things.

1. Fast girls who believe they can be competitive and want to race with us
2. Televised coverage
3. Help with spannering
4. Kit
5. Sponsors

Thoughts?
I'm mainly posting on here to recruits girls, but if anyone else has contacts and ideas that would be great. By the way we have 23 potential racers already, but don't expect all to be on the grid next year so many more are needed!!

Please contact me, Susie, on site@bikegirl.co.uk and I'll email you my number.

Laura - please get back in touch and get on the grid with us!!

Thanks.

Good for you bikegirl.
I wish you all the best with this adventure.
Could i suggest that you go for an all women track side crew including mechanics?
This would look pretty impressive and might even put the other teams off their game so to speak! Wink

I'm trying that. I have a 15 yr old apprentice spanner girl already. Struggling to find female mechanics but trying hard anyway.

I'm looking at starting racing in a rookie clas with bemsee next year. Don't have a 'team' as such either.

Too bad I'm being discrminated against, I thought that was so a 20th century thing Razz.

You can still join in the paddock frolics Wink ! What class? 600s? I'm prob running in Rookie 6s myself. The girls are likely to be spread amongst Rookie 4, Rookie 6, Superteens and Minitwins.

Hoping to do rookie 600s on my r6 (presuming I can make it work properly by then Smile Confused ).

Was intending to start this year but the car accident we had put me in a much, much worse financial situation.

I will probably only be doing a few rounds as I can't afford a whole season anyway.

This sort of thing annoys me for some reason, not just because I'm heavily sedated and the home nurse has been round to inject me because of my pain Wink. If women wanted to do it then they would, there's no place for discrimination in this country anymore so my guess would be that only about 1% of the people applying for these jobs are women and thus is shown in the amount of women at race days.

Good luck anyway Thumbs Up.

I don't imagine any of those teams are saying 'we won't take on a girl for a particular job' (after all, they'd have a potential discrimination lawsuit on their hands if they did). It just happens that they're men, it's not by intention IMO. As Jimbo says, it probably accurately reflects the ratio of women who are actually interested in racing to the level required to actually take part in a season - look at the number of women on an average trackday.

Sorry, I just dislike discrimination in any direction.

And as for having a go, I'm a realist. 5 trackdays in the novice group does not a racer make.

8 Races with an orange jersey on at clubbike meets doth mak'th a racer!

Sponsership will be the real bastard to get hold of, most companies dont want to know about club bike level racing, which results in it being more an expensive hobby than the next step from track days.

An all female team would make for a more interesting team, i suggest contacting companies which produce biking stuff aimed at women as they would likely be interested in using your team to advertise their stuff to bike interested women

Any race team is happy to have anyone in the team who can ride well enough, male or female. Well, apart from that all girls bike team. Thumbs Down

Agree with Bendy they'd be a huge amount of fuss kicked up if someone launched a race team which was an all male race team. Discrimination is wrong, and I'm sure you bikegirl would be one of the people making a fuss if someone launched a male only bike team. You can't object to people discriminating against you and then go and discriminate against other people. Thumbs Down

There are many women in bike racing teams, jsut not many riders. The rizzla guys in BSB wouldnt know where to go without one major team member who organises where everyone should be and when, and yes she is a women!
If you looked into motor sport i bet you couldnt find an all male team anyware.

Yes. You offering?
There will be male spanners... I'm aiming for female racers and I'll work on the mechanics side too.

I understand what some of you are saying and I've always been a biker first, female second so it kind of goes against the grain slightly for me. But there are lots of girls who are keen to race and feel very intimidated by the male dominance of the sport; this discourages many. I've got a girl joining who has been kicked and spat at in MotoX because she was doing well and a small number of men ganged up against her since they didn't appreciate being passed by a girl.
Discrimination in its place. Equality I'm all for. It isn't there in the sport right now. Yes, girls can join, but there's more to it than the physical capability of joining - there's a whole attitude to change.
The media interest is high, so I fully intend to do what I can and up the number.
I've called the DVLA and around 10% of bikers are female. So why aren't 10% of racers female? Because no girls are interested?

Quite possibly. Remember that racing is an inherently 'male' thing to do, that's just biological fact - your average man is a whole lot more competitive than your average woman.

I go back to the trackday thing - I think the most women I've seen on a trackday was about 6 and that was at Snetterton with big novice and inter groups... still wasn't 10% of the field.

I'm part of that 10% of bikers and I'm not interested in racing because I know I'd be shit at it. If I ever reach a point where I think I'd have a snowball's chance in hell of being competitive, I'd give it a go.

I hope it works out and you recruit some girls who can kick some butt and show that sex is irrelevant on the track. But I fear that by making it 'all girl' you're opening yourself up for massive criticism should it fail. Confused

Why not? Smile

I think it’s a good idea anyway. It’s a good way for promoting racing for women. There are probably a lot of women out there who love following racing but don’t get involved because they think it’s a male only sport or don’t know how to get into it. Who cares if you are discriminating against men anyway? Would anyone here complain?

It annoys me that women have campaigned for years to get equal right, equal pay, equal this equal that.. then always want a seperate womens league, womens team, womens this womens that Rolling Eyes

But I think in a way, it's a good idea to promote womens racing, but I think maybe that it won't be too popular and will fall flat on it's face... not because your not capable of racing, probably far from it.. just that if more women wanted to race then I'm sure they just would...

Most racing has mostly men in it, purely because more men are interested in these sort of things.. that'll be why there aren't many men in Yoga or flower arranging........

I'm off to make an all mens Yoga class.. wish me luck Very HappyLaughing
