Can't get insurance for the MXR I'm picking up today.

Using Compare The Market and also tried Bennetts website.

I've tried adjusting different variables to see if I can get to the bottom of why they won't quote me, but no good.

I know the system isn't picking up the new registration yet, tried entering the bike manually, even tried different models of bikes.

Nothing coming back.

Any ideas why this might be?

39yo, 5 years NCB, no accidents, only one SP30

Where do you live? Do you have a brick garage? what mileage are you putting in? Did you not get a quote before you committed to buy?

It's either a tiny electric motocross bike or a BMW M1000XR.

You've tried two websites so I think you should try some more and phone some brokers.

You say you've tried adjusting variables, have you tried changing your address to a rural area with expensive house prices and low crime rates? Find somewhere suitable on rightmove and use that.

I'm guessing it's an M1000XR. https://www.bmw-motorrad.co.uk/en/models/m/m1000xr.html

It might also be one of these. https://www.funbikes.co.uk/p11069_blue-mxr-1300w-electric-mini-dirt-bike Laughing

I mean, why would you... that being said I looked at the insurance cost of the 401 vs Duke 390 and the latter was ~£100 more for what is essentially the same bike.

Rural Kent, low crime rate, but unfortunately no garage. Put 4,999 miles. No I didn't get a quote beforehand.

Spent all day on the phone and internet to different insurers and brokers.

Nobody would quote me.

Turns out it was down to two things:

1) it's not garaged

2) my 5 NCD are tied up on another policy

Playing with either (but not both) variables yielded no joy, had to do BOTH to get anyone to quote me. So I've now got to garage the bike at another address in the meantime and cancel my other policy to use the NCD from it.

Didn't have this with the Multi Pikes Peak when that was new. I mean it wasn't easy or cheap to get cover, but I was able to sort it in the end. Plus a lot less stressful as it was delivered to me so other than having an uninsured bike on my driveway not a big deal, whereas today I was kinda stranded at the dealer trying to sort this out all day before I could leave (or get a lift home and leave the bike there which I didn't want to do).

Not ideal circumstances, but MXR is now on cover.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions.

I believe there's a 14 day cooling off period so might eek that out and cancel if I can get a better deal once the registration appears on the database.

If that is a reponse to my reply, then yes, its one of the first things i check when looking at changing any vehicle i have ever owned

a) can i get insurance on it
b) how much more is it going to cost me

I thought this would be a pretty standard practice for most people thinking of changing vehicle................. maybe i'm the odd one out

No, you are being eminently sensible. More a case of getting past the "danger zone" of 16~35yo and assuming things will be fine Smile

the duke 390 is one of the most stolen bikes around, as the engine fits in the 125 frame perfectly.

loads of "390 but registered as a 125" ktms for sale continuously

Now it makes sense! Thanks. I'm guessing fewer Husqvarna 125s (I've never seen one in the wild) and let's see...

Twice as many Duke 125 vs. Svartpilen 125 listed on FleaBay. Second hand Vitpilen 125 are almost not a thing.

The subframe is the only substantive difference between the Huskies and KTMs which reveals how thick the people are that do such engine swaps Smile

This thread has prompted me to check my own insurance (renewal is in July so not far off.)

Looks like I'll be kicking Bennetts in favour of... well anyone really (according to the Meerkats) most quotes are £50~£100 less than my current insurance. The official renewal is yet to hit the doormat but I doubt it'll be much different.

Correct

39yo

Rural low crime rate

No accidents or claims

Only one SP30

Albeit no garage

Yes I had a bit of difficulty on the Ducati last year but that was a higher value and I was able to get it sorted after a bit of digging around

Should have checked first but kinda knew I would make it happen one way or the other, as it turns out I was able to sort it (somehow) albeit it in less than ideal circumstances. Got the bike I wanted, that's the main thing

Sure it's low crime, it's Kent. You have instant links to Tonbridge pikey site and also the short way through to London via sevenoaks.

My postcode near there in Wateringbury was about 2x the price of my Sittingbourne postcode which was OBSCENE. Laughing

Ah, a 'performance cross-over tourer' with '200 BHP and aero winglets',according to Bennetts review..

Wowzer!

I remember BITD when I was a personal lines insurance underwriter Norwich Union as it was wouldn't cover group 17 bikes for anyone without a garage and 5 years NCD, that was in 2006/7.

Don't forget that Bennets will treat a shed as a garage as long as its got a solid base, might be worth looking into. a wooden shed chucked on some slabs would do the trick and not cost much as long as you've got access.

One insurance company I dealt with specified "made entirely of bricks" - this was only mentioned in the policy booklet, on the application it only said "garaged"... so I called and queried it because my garage is half brick, half timber.

They said "well, the wording is very clear"

I then pointed out than "nobody's fucking garage is made entirely of bricks because they have to have fucking doors and a roof"

"We'll get back to you"

I got an email confirming that my half-brick construction was fine.

I dunno what world the policy writers live in. I've only had one address with a brick garage - the others have all been concrete panel construction. And I can't see a single skin brick wall being any stronger.

That's good to know, was considering doing this anyway as part of the solution, didn't know Bennetts had that policy but thought saying it was on locked private property or something would have done the job.

I plan to cancel my current policy before the cool-off period is up, just had to get SOMETHING in place in order to get it away from the dealer.

My driveway is block paved and big enough for 4 cars plus a row of 3/4 motorbikes. If my wife allows it, I might see if I can get some sort of structure erected on the driveway instead of the back garden. I assume block paving counts as a solid base.

I think it's called "let's find any possible reason or loophole possible to avoid paying out".

You could get an asgard - might need planning permission for the front garden.

I need to sort something for me, my bike lives on the drive, low crime area, still had one nicked and the other is rotting away. Got space down the side of the house but it's grass in front and the Mrs is growing potatoes there at the mo. I do like potatoes.
