Human nature to do it, and you make up excuses to deflect pious overspoken gits who have never been there.

this quip from Ricardo made me think as especially over the last week it seems shop assistants have been cack with me and either undercharge me massively (£2 for a full tank o gas! almost) , or when they give me far too much change.

I always point out their mistake since more often than not the company they work for docks their wages and in that its a form of stealing. And I was taught not to steal.

Thing is whats your opinion on this sort of behaviour? , good karma , just me being a good person or me just being silly and not exploiting those who might given the chance exploit me to the max.

Am I seriously archaic in behaving like this? , what would you do if a bloke at a till gave you way too much change?

Would correct them to be honest, I been thinking about this alot recently, karma and all that, in real life.

I believe the more generous and good you are to your friends, and even strangers, the more willing people will be to be generous to you. Like how certain people go out of their way to help others, it's really inspired to me to act the same way.

I believe that what goes around comes around.

As profound it is certain events have confirmed this belief for me lately so I am taking steps to be more like the above description.

The expression "do as you would be done by" has stood me in pretty good stead all my life. Treating people with respect and politeness, kindess and generosity has had a more positive effect in my life over the years than consciously treating people badly (which I try to avoid doing) or doing them harm.

But I've learnt you have to watch out for the ones who would consciously do you harm, regardless of your good intentions. You have to keep your eyes open, be a bit streetwise, and learn to understand that there are many people to whom cuntish behaviour is a way of life, and that random or calculated acts of wankerage are many people's way of justifying their own paranoia or inadequacy, or trying to excuse their inability to be responsible for themselves and their actions.

Having said that ... revenge is a dish best served cold Twisted Evil

"way too much" ... I'd probably give it back.
"not all that much too much" ... I probably wouldn't.

There is nothing wrong with being overly honest and not gaining advantage by others mistakes.

The only time being nice can be a real disadvantage, is if you are overly tolerant of people having things their way or fucking you over.

I have a tendency to be nice in this way, which means if there is something important, and i try to stand up for myself, I cant always pull it off and people know they can walk all over me.

Im getting better but some people are very used to having things their way.

I sometimes like to think I might like to dish out some revenge at some point, but I probably never will.

The best thing is to win in the first place so you dont need to get revenge.

I think there is an element of karma in all this.

For example, I bought a scratchcard in a petrol station and when he gave it to me, he said 'that's £11 please.' (£10 petrol) The scratchcard was a £2 one. I could have gone with it, but I corrected him and he was really grateful; I imagine Esso is one of those wage docking companies. Rolling Eyes

It turns out I won on the scratchcard. I went to claim the £10 I thought I had won, and it turns out I had won £30 and missed the other win! It just seems like a pretty decent coincidence to me.

Theres a small garage close to my house on the way to work, I fill up my petrol there quite often and they dont have those pumps that comminucates with the shop and says how much you have filled up. Every time I go in the man says "£5 is it then?" even when ive filled up with say £12, im so tempted everytime but ive never done it because I know its wrong

I'd give it back, I'm another hopeless sap who believes in honesty and not fucking people over. The only time I'd keep quiet would be if the other party had just treated me poorly, then I'd treat it as karmic payback.

I'm not sure if I do believe that any more. A lifetime of being nice and helpful and generally trying to cause the least hassle to other people doesn't seem to be getting me anywhere. Fair enough, I think it's served me okay in my work, but in the real world I feel entirely fucked over by life and wonder when the great karma god is going to start paying me back something for the 28 years of kindness I've paid in.

You’ve got to work hard to get people to help you out, a lot of my closest friends have done some pretty awesome things for me in the recent past and that’s from me being who I am.

I’ve had on numerous occasions now people from school telling me that, since school I haven’t changed, and that is a really nice thing to hear, the reason it is so good to hear is because I made an effort to do so.

Some friends I’ve seen since they’ve been to Uni for example have turned out to be very arrogant, think they know everything or make out like they don’t have time for you. “I’m in a band…” and shit like that.
Some people I see now make a BIG effort to be nice to me, especially the real chavvy ones who love my MC’ing, in school they thought I wasn’t cool enough, makes me laugh because like I said I’ve never changed, just always been sound, always treat everyone equal. Now they are older, they understand.

Karma is a load of shit, I call it ‘making an effort’, you’re going to be fucked over by someone at some point, people who believe strongly in this sort of thing will relate a few events to this one and that and so on until they come up with a reason someone short changed them.
If I find a wallet, I take all the cash and take the wallet to the lost and found so they get all their cards back, it’s a fair deal.
I remember reading somewhere ‘Saying thank you to someone for opening a door takes more effort than opening it’ and that is considered karma, I call it effort.

They're obviously only being nice as you know they're in the closet... Laughing

Sorry, it had to be done.

But I'm another one of those people who does things for other people with no gain for myself. I even do it in work, too much, which is going to have to stop.

(Although, my kind heartedness is bound to not let me anyway)

It's nice to know that there are some honest people in the country!

People who have never been till assistants don't realise how mind numbing and demanding the job is at the same time. When you are you doing the same job over and over, you are extremely liable to make a slip up when it comes to change. I often give someone an extra fiver by accident because I thought they gave me a £20 note and a not a tenner. More often than not people are friendly about it but you know that some of the low lives think they are macho and managed to squeeze some money out o the capitalist system. They don't think of the poor bugger on the till who will have his wages docked. Sad

I recall the Mirror doing an unscientific test about this 2 years back , out of 20 people given the wrong change on purpose one person turned back and informed the fake shop assistant behind the counter he's given her too much change.

I would say I’ve been very honest to others, I’ve handed in items to lost and found and I once found a wallet I actually gave in to the police.
Retailers on the other hand lie through the back teeth to the public, if I get an opportunity I’d take it.

Honest is ALWAYS the best policy. I was in a pub once and she forgot that I hadn't paid. I could have easily just walked away and saved £2.25, but I told her. I would have even if it wasn't my local. Just the other day, at work, some guy got quite drunk and couldn't remember if he paid for his drinks... On two separate occasions! I could have easily said to him then, 'no, not yet...' and put £35 in my pocket, and put the other money he gave me in the till. A firm believer in what goes around, comes around. Although, some guy was really after getting a good smack the other day after poking my for nothing in a take away, pissed he was. Thought he was all macho. I was dying to just floor him but resisted it, went home, and the I go and find my iPod has killed its self, death by misadventure! Some karma that is!

Lol. Bless you.

When i worked at tesco id give so much free stuff to customers, but only if they were pleasant to me. It was karma in a way.

No one who asked got it for free, but if i happened to forget to scan the odd bottle of vodka or such, whoopsie.

The staff there didnt care, the managers didnt care, and its hardly proveable.

It all falls down to plausible deniability.

Whilst i agree, i wouldnt fuck off smaller family owned businesses etc, faceless corporations i love taking to the cleaners.

Also one point you may not have picked up on, if you give someone more change/free stuff, and they come back later trying to be good, it draws attention to you... and gets you buggered up the arse.

To be fair, very few times does it happen accidentally.

Well I'm polite and courteous to everyone I meet, but I don't get many people being nice back, although I think you do the right thing Itchy.

Personally I'd correct the person because to me its stealing.
